View Full Version : HKL DVD RELEASES LIST

Now that they are mostly oop, and considered collectors items. I thought I would make a list of what this (for the most part) great label put out, in its seven year run, or how ever long it was. Not all their releases were perfect (some were re-released, but I'll only list each title once). But in terms of extras and stuff, they were the best (at least untill Bey and Brian White left). Towards the end I kinda lost track of their releases. So if you know of any other titles, then feel free to add, and I will update the list.

Dragon,
Try chaos.com out of Australia. They distribute many HKL titles through Magna Pacific. I have bought from them before (WAY OF THE DRAGON-Platinum 2-disc Edition) and they are very reliable. The USD is strong against the AUD. Use XE.com for currency conversion. :)
Also try amazon.co.uk. They still have a number of HKL titles, too. However, the USD is not as strong against the GBP. :o
Yeah, Australia is one of your best bets to find HKL titles.

Only one I'm after is DREADNAUGHT to upgrade my Mega Star disc.
HKL DREADNAUGHT is a very nice disc. I enjoyed the remastered print, which was very nice, and a lovely interview with Lily Li. There is also a "Who is Wong Fei -Hung?" feature.
If you like this film, this disc is a must.

HKL also released 'Sex & Zen'.
'Once Upon A Time In China & America' wasn't a HKL release, if I remember correctly I think it was MIA.

Sex And Zen is confirmed!
And I was a little unsure about OUATICAA myself, but I don't own it, so I couldn't be a 100% sure!
Are you a 100% sure they didn't release it? I seem to remember seeing a HKL version at one point!

HKL definitely didn't release OUATICAA. There were also a few releases that they released only as part of their magazine range, such as A CHINESE GHOST STORY 3, PRISON ON FIRE 1&2, THE HEROIC TRIO 1&2, PEKING OPERA BLUES.

Yes, please don't turn this into a Q & A unrelated to HKL dvd's! If you can add to the list, fine. Anything else belongs elsewhere. This is just meant as a list of HKL releases, that's it.
Once we've listed and confirmed every title they ever released , the thread can be locked!

I was thinking it would also be worth creating a sub-list for HKL's sister label, Premier Asia.
They used this label to release any titles which weren't directly from Hong Kong, but there was some great stuff which I'm sure people on the forum would be interested in, such as Ong Bak, Warrior King (aka Tom Yum Goong / The Protector), City of Violence, Crying Fist etc.
TibetanWhiteCrane
04-15-2009, 05:27 PM
I was actually going to do that, but aren't overly familiar with their output! If anyone has a complete list of Premiere Asia releases, please post it in this thread!

& for Premier Asia add:
Ichi The Killer - Animated version

The Cannonball Run wasn't HKL. It was their parent company Medusa. Though they did get the rights as part of the Golden Harvest/Star TV package alongside Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

i've still not completed my HKL collection, but there are some that appear cheap (and NEW!!) on play.com from time to time.
recent additions to my collection were several of the mid-late 70s Jackie Chan flicks and Sex & Zen (over the top quirky comic soft core naughtiness;))

£18.99! Are they taking the piss? That's actually more than the original in-store RRP. I can't justify spending that kind cash. Will wait for the (eventual) DD release.

Yeah I have seen hongkong-store.com before, even before these titles became OOP they charged £18.99 a pop...not really sure what they're thinking.
In regards to the HKL list, I don't think it's been mentioned yet but back in 2006 they released a Jackie Chan boxset with 'Crime Story', 'Dragon Lord', & 'Heart of the Dragon'.
The boxset came with a bonus DVD called 'Heromakers', which was a fairly good exclusive documentary about the stuntmen & actors working in Hong Kong cinema past & present. As far as I'm aware it was only released as part of this set.

OUATIC 1-3 were HKL (i have them in a set together), OUATICAAmerica wasn't. i know it was released in UK, but think it was from MIA/Hong Kong Classics.
for HKL complete-tists, there is also the AN INTRODUCTION TO HONG KONG LEGENDS. it contains the earlier released HITMAN movie loads of trailers & a promo feature about the HKL label & their restoration of Hong Kong flix (don't know if this feature is available anywhere else??)

i've got the U.K. budget release of Gen X Cops by Prism Leisure.
extras: widescreen, trailers, making of, music video, cast & crew filmogs.
if Prism only had the rights for a short time (i believe this is the case with most budget labels) then HKL might of released it afterwards, or maybe as an issue of the magazine they were doing???

The UK Hong Kong Legends DVD has been out of print for ages. I sold mine on Amazon UK brand new and sealed for over 20 quid a long while ago. The cheapest second-hand copies are going for £14.99 currently. It all depends on what someone is actually willing to pay.

Why anybody would pay big bucks for HKL version of Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars is beyond me. There is a perfectly good version available from Fortune Star that can be had for 11-12 bucks brand new. Canto/manadarin/anamorphic WS/uncut/English subs and very good pic quality too.
I'll probably take some flak for this but I find HKL overrated. Since they were a UK based company they are subject to the archaic censorship laws that are imposed there and consequently alot of their releases are cut so I don't see why everybody is so nuts over them.

I'm not well up on what has been censored on Hong Kong Legends DVDs, perhaps someone more knowledgeable can post which Hong Kong Legends films have been cut?
What I do know is the BBFC has loosened its censorship restrictions in the last decade or so. I think various cuts that were made for the UK were imposed by the studios to get a lower rating.

Mark, you're probably right but it remains to be seen what Hong Kong Legends DVDs get released. Most of us are probably looking for the more obscure titles to be re released not the more popular Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan films which are the only guaranteed releases.

Battle Creek Brawl, Body Weapon, Dreadnaught, Eastern Condors, The Iron-Fisted Monk, My Lucky Stars, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow were all cut... Can't think of any more off-hand.
BCB and MLS should be passed uncut now.
DN, EC, and SITES will almost certainly still be cut.
BW and TIFM probably still cut... perhaps less so?

Many people, including me, want the HKL releases because of the extra material. And yes, there are some cut HKL releases, but of over 100 releases I don't think it's even 10 of them that is cut and most are cut just a couple of seconds, so it's not that bad. Personally I have bought both the uncut version and the HKL release if the HKL release is cut and I want it for the extras (especially Bey Logan commentaries).

Well I think it's over 10. Think about it,any time there is a scene where an animal gets hurt,a rape scene, certain weapons being used and even some types of criminal activity you can bet it's cut. As distasteful as some of those elements are, I don't want an incomplete film. The cat vs snake scene in SITES is an essential part of the movie-to think some govt dolt can just chop it out is absurd to me.
I feel those cut releases are worthless because first and foremost I want the film intact as the director wanted it. I can see where the extra features would have some value but that's like a hamburger minus the meat-sure the fixings are nice but the essential thing isn't there.

True dat, Silver Fox. Nothing is more despicable than a censored movie (well, except for the inane English dubs that the usual bunch of lobotomized "old skool" idiots would cough up, that is...) BUT after securing an uncut US or HK print the extras and the priceless Bey Logan commentaries in particular made me snap up most of the censored HKL's as well...:squigglemouth:
OK, fact is that about 10 percent of all HKL releases were cut. But what about Cine Asia? There's no reason to hope that their re-issues would pass uncut, companeros. Just witness their release of EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS. And brace yourself for a seriously mutilated BD of SHAOLIN in a few months...

I'll take any bet that they will only issue the most common HKL titles, not the whole catalogue.

There is one and only case I liked censored movie over uncut. And it`s Revenge Of the ninja, somehow I did not like gory scenes even as movie overall is masterpiece.

When it comes to how many of HKL's releases that are cut, as someone mentioned earlier the censor rules in the UK are not as strict as they used to be so none of the releases are cut (to my knowlege) because of certain weapons being used and "Encounters of a Spooky Kind" for instance includes the scene where the chicken is killed. So to my knowlege it's just about 10 movies being cut. Most of them will probably still be cut if Cine-Asia releases them.
But I totally agree that a movie should be uncut and as I stated I buy two versions if want both the uncut release and one with lots of extra material.

Chicken killing is passed if it's done ritual style (ie. not deemed to be cruel).
Personally I'd rather they didn't shoot such horrible material in the first place.
The BBFC no longer make cuts for weapons use or imitable techniques.

"I'll take any bet that they will only issue the most common HKL titles, not the whole catalogue."
I have a feeling too that they are only going to re-issue the most common titles, so far they've announced Ong Bak, Warrior King, Fist of Fury & Prodigal Son and from that list only Prodigal Son isn't already widely available as an orginial hkl release. They've talked about bringing out the Bruce Lee films again (yawn) and the Police Story & Once Upon A Time in China series but there's been no mention of the films unreleased by hkl that we are all waiting for eg Tiger Cage 2. The thing is I think most people will already own the more popular films so sales will be poor and this could lead them to stop releasing further lesser known movies.

It would nice they released flims they never got release like the Tiger Cage flims which is my dream release with commentary by Bey Logan and Donnie yen. Other than rehashing some of there releases are okay but i expect them to release flims they didn't release in the past before closing shop in 2007 and i know i'm over reaching i do hope they release an uncut verison of Drunken Master 2 and maybe, release Drunken Master featuring the Cantonese track which was missing from the original release.

HKL don't have the rights to Drunken Master anymore. It's either with Sony or Universal. A budget priced reissue comes out in June.

Do they still have SITES? It was down for a platinum release in the old HKL days (with the Hwang Jang Lee interview that Mike Leeder did) but obviously it never happened, the original HKL disc didn't even have a commentary and as this is one of my favourites i've always hoped it'd finally get the release it deserves.

Judging by the extras this looks like the original Premier Asia release but now with Bey's commentary, so i'm wondering if the commentary is brand new or if it's the same one used on the US Dragon Dynasty version.

I agree, it would be cool to have one with BL and the Don for that one.
Although, the one with Michael Wong and Stephan Hammond is actually pretty funny. Though, Hammond comes off more clueless than he really is, for some reason. I mean really, you didn't know Yuen Shun Yi was Yuen Woo Ping's brother???
Of course, BL set the standard for name checking actors so high, that anybody is gonna look slightly ignorant in comparison.
