There are a few Hong Kong/Taiwanese/Mainland movies that depict styles that look like they are supposed to come from Western China (like the Xinjiang region). The people using these styles are typically wearing Islamic style clothing.

These are only a few of the movies I can think of off-hand that have something like this. It seems there are a lot.

Kung Fu Hero Wang Wu: mainland film with some cool scimitar (?) fighting and weird handwork.

Big Land, Flying Eagles: haven't seen all of it but the first fight has some guy using a strange semi-curved short sword.

Operation Scorpio!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMWsDbOILZU

What stance is the opponent using before he goes into that weird Hung Gar (?) bit? I know most styles are made up, sometimes completely, but it comes from somewhere; there is a clear connection between fighters in Moslem garb and some very different open hand styles. Others that come to mind:

Ji Chun-hua's style in the Wing Chun TV series? (might not be a good example)

Game of Killers: the final two henchman use some obviously fake, but still pretty unique, hand styles

For the weaponless fighting, it's most likely Xinyi Liuhe Quan. Cha Quan and Qi Shi Quan are also good possibilities.

I actually believe this is from the Silat systems of Indonesia. They have hand techniques that kind of look like they have roots in chinese arts, but their weapons are more influenced by the muslems. Jungle fighting arts.

Thanks for the quick response. Now that I think about it the scenes from Operation Scorpio and the Wing Chun TV series do look like what little silat I have seen (maybe buaya?).

The other films were set in desert settings (I presume in the west) and did have some odd weapon work, but the hand styles may not have been as distinctive as the ones that were actually silat.
