Will be 45 in October.Started watching Kung Fu movies in cinemas at the age of 7 (there was no certification/censorship in my neck of the woods).have never looked back since and I'm still trying to keep up to date though I prefer not to comment much on movies made within the last 10 years.I was lucky enough to grow up in the golden age of Kung Fu Cinema and therefore viewed many classics upon initial release, delayed release,re-release or re-run.
The best period for me was 1971 - 1980 (some 60's films where shown in this time frame like One-Armed Swordsman and The Return Of The One -Armed Swordsman)
In the 80s I enjoyed the Jackie Chan/Sammo Hung/Yuen Biao collaboration and appreciated the D & B films plus some Jet Li movies up till Fist Of Legend. The Ninja era was ok (not those awful mishmash) and the Alexander Lou films were cool.
We hope to continue supporting Kung Fu movies and wish they go back to basics.
I'm 41. I got my start watching the Shaws on "Drive In Theater" on a NY cable station in the early 80's, when I was in my early teens. I kind of got out of the genre through most of my twenties, and along with that, got a bit out of shape. In the mid-90's though, I started going to a lot of Hong Kong movie nights at Boston-area theaters, and got into the Chow Yun Fat movies, and some of the New Wave wuxia stuff. This led me to rediscover old-school, and also to start studying Chinese martial arts under a good teacher and to get back in shape. Then, with the remastering of the Shaw library, the floodgates opened as far as my picking up old-school DVDs!
I now enjoy the genre more than ever, I think I get more out of the movies now---and they also motivate me to keep up with my training.

im 28 years old and i use ps3 controller to type not keyboard results in lots of editing. I have shown kung fu movies to younger generation, all they want is neat looking cgi. Im going to try and get my younger cousin into kung fu flicks, seems the genre is coming out of it's deep sleep so now or never.
you telling me about you using a ps3 control maybe i'm i'm not finding it as hard but i'm using a "wiimote"
in fact i was put off by films with cgi when i first started watching these films.

Not all younger generation hate CGI, I know there many out there that would love kung fu movies but they just don't know about them yet because they have never been exposed to them.
I hate using PS3 controller, they seem to have a mind of their own since they will put words in there that you never typed sometimes, and much patience is needed when trying to complete a sentence.
"they will put words in there that you never typed sometimes" yeah i have the same on wii but i turned it off.
Do you think CGI could go to far so actors are not people?

I have no idea what you just typed. 'Thx' has been an abbreviation of thanks for ages (and yes it was supposed to be ironic). There's really no need for 'in2' (which is a new one on me...) when into will suffice. I don't think this forum is the right place for it. Just my opinion.

Yeah I agree with Markgway. Not trying to come down on you J, but I find it frustrating too. Instead of getting the meaning of what you're saying, I wind up spending so much time just trying to decipher your "text speak". Give us older dudes a break, huh? :)

Yes - you've hit the nail on the head, Bob.
I often skim through posts quite quickly, but when they contain excessive text speak I have to slow to a crawl and examine each word, which I personally find annoying. Maybe it doesn't bother everyone, but I felt it was worth mentioning in case it becomes more prevelant here.

I guess I don't win the gold here, but I am proud to say that I am 54, eight months younger that Fu Sheng, proud to say it because, he would have been this old!
When I first lived in Hawaii in 1960-1964, there was a Japanese station that showed lots of Samurai, and though my older brothers and I did not understand a word, we were fascinated.
Yes, I even watched the original airings of "The Green Hornet". Then we moved back to Hawaii in 1967, and we discovered the theaters, it was either the Empress, or Queen, or Princess theater, can never remember the name of it, in Chinatown and our love of Chinese kung fu cinema was born. My eldest brother began to study Kenpo, and he would teach his younger siblings what he had learned. 1971, we moved to Oregon, where it was a lot harder to stay in touch with Hong Kong. Thank God for Bruce Lee, he opened up the cinema world, at least through to the mid eighties, with theaters featuring him, and Shaw Brothers, and everyone else who was making the genre at the time. I saw "New One Armed Swordsman" a.k.a. "Triple Irons" at least three times at the drive in, "The Duel", a.k.a. "Duel of the Iron Fists" twice in the theater, just to mention a couple. I Took a vacation to Hawaii in '75, and blessed be, "Marco Polo" was playing at the big theater in Chinatown, I bought 8x10's in the lobby! of David Chiang, Ti Lung and Fu Sheng. If I can get the courage to go into the attic crawlspace, I think I can find them.
I have been studying Tai Chi for several years, and I am still learning, and it makes a world of difference in how young you feel.
Stephen Chow's attitude in "Shaolin Soccer" is positively spot on! that's the spirit to try and have.
