I was thinking of buying South Shaolin master. Is it really worth it? Mainland kung fu productions are rarely mentioned. Maybe a lot of people prefer hard hitting kung fu to wushu. I'd like to explore the mainland classics but the only ones I know are Shaolin temple and South Shaolin master, the later I haven't seen yet. What are the must see kung fu movies from China? Is South Shaolin master one of them?

Ninjas and Dragons is a good Mainland film. The Rarescope DVD is fine

IMO it is. My "essential" mainland films list is:

South Shaolin Master
Cutthroat Struggle aka Shaolin Assassin
Marshes of Sha Liang Po
Fist from Shaolin
Revenge of Tai Chi Master
Undaunted Wu Dang
Holy Robe of Shaolin Temple
Lover´s Blood

Many include Jet Li´s Shaolin Temple trilogy as mainland films, if so, they would also be in the list. Other mainland films well esteemed by fans are:

Lucky 13
Pride´s Deadly Fury (I didn´t like the choreo on this one, nice story though)

they've been talked about quite a bit here over the years. If you dig thought the Classic forum, you might find a thread or two. As for the films, I enjoy them quite a bit. Some of the better ones no including the Shaolin Temple series:

Prides Deadly Fury
Undaunted Wu Tang
Warriors of Sung Dynasty
South Shaolin Master
Holy Robe of Shaolin Temple
Murky Shadows Over the Gorges
Arhat's In Fury

South Shaolion Master is good, SSM 2, run for your life! My fav is probably Undaunted Wudang.

And King of Kings is a swordplay, but I would put that up there on my list of favorites.

south shaolin master is a great film feels like old school hk as far as action. 8/10

south shaolin master 2 well it seemed like a cash in on the wire trend after the sucess of once upon a time in china there are way too many similarities. 6/10 but i didn't mind it

I think Swordsman from double flag town is a Mainland film. Its not fight filled, but its still cool.

Souh Shaolin Master has some amazing fights. These dudes are like acrobats. Didn't like the animal abuse, tho. It turned me off. Surprised that Yellow River Fighter is not on more people's lists.

Thanks guys. But I can't find any of those titles anywhere. I'm interested particularly in Warriors of the Sung dynasty, Holy robe of shaolin (two movies of wich I saw clips and they look great) and Undaunted wudang. Where do you find these movies? I looked everywhere I know of...

Check the second link carefully, it shows also another dvd edition of the same movie, under the aka of Shaolin vs Wu Tang 2: Wu Tang Invasion, amd it´s cheaper than Crash

South Shaolin Temple is easily availabe also, and same for Revenge of Tai Chi Master (I am trading that one on Buying forum), available both on VHS and DVD (on the UK and UK online stores)

I saw SSM 1 and Undaunted WuDang and they are wonderful classics.
The martial arts displayed amazed me. Honestly I never thought a woman
lead would have the fire and raw emotion necessary for a good kung fu film.
I was wrong. Undaunted Wudang gave me a reality check. Most of the actors
must have been martial artists as the moves were precise and the speed was
amazing. I'll have to get my hands on more mainland classics.

SSM 2 was a shame.. I will still hold on to it but the wire work was horrible
and it just seemed like they went too far with it all .
