New Shaolin Temple to be Set in Early 20th Century
-- New Shaolin Temple --
New Shaolin Temple that Shaolin, Henan Movie & TV and EMP are producing is being written by Yuen Kam Lun. The movie is set in the Republican period in early 1900s, when the land was divided and ruled by rivalling feudal warlords, and the people were living in hard times [possibly just after the Manchurian government was toppled or death of General Yuan Shikai]. The story revolves around the monks from Shaolin Temple extending their help to the populace and even sacrificing their lives.
The production is currently in talks with Jet Li and Andy Lau to star in the film, with the former invited to play a senior monk. Production begins no earlier than end of the year.

That would be the bee's knees man! All the classic old school stars playing senior monks? And it could showcase the small amount of newer talent that keeps getting wasted- Wu Jing, or has only played supporting roles- the great martial artist that fought Donnie in the outdoor cafe in FLASHPOINT (I forget his name)- as the top students. And can we leave out the wires (save for a few minor enchancments) and get some serious Shaolin kung fu here?

i think they should make Jet the elder brother but have LKL in there has the head Abbot! That would be tight! With (like others said) GL,CKT,CKC,Ti Lung,Sammo,Yuen Biao, and some venoms playing brothers...
Then have the main character sneak out the temple and run into a Drunken Master (Jackie) who teaches him a little drunken fist....and a Wing Chun master (donnie yen)...
and make the main character Miu Tse (lil boy from New Legend of Shaolin/Champions)....he has much potential!
and have each choreographed by som1 else...Jackie, LKL, Sammo, Cory Yuen, Woo Ping
and the villain is Tony Jaa

The actual Shaolin Temple is involved in this... which is something, I'm just not sure what.
I wonder if this is going to resemble the old Mainland wushu/kung fu films at all. Certainly the ambivalence towards religion in the Shaolin Temple series and others (Arhats in Fury comes to mind immediately) won't be a part of this one, but given the setting, I can certainly see it carrying on the tiresome nationalistic/propagandist vibe. The fact that that vibe has been pretty popular in martial arts films of late doesn't give me much hope either.
Oh, I absolutely won't care so long as there's finally some decent Shaolin kung fu on display. They should try and find Yu Cheng Hui, Hu JiangQian (I think he teaches in the US), Yu Hai, Sun Jian Kui and anyone else they can find from the original movies. It could be an all star reunion of all of the genre's older, unfairly forgotten talent.

Chinese action star Jet Li won't be starring in a remake of "The Shaolin Temple," which helped launch his acting career.
A report from China Radio International stated that Li was promoting his self-developed exercise "Wuji" in Beijing on Wednesday when reporters at the event asked him to confirm his involvement in the project.
But the actor is quoted as telling reporters, "I never heard about this film."
Several Chinese media reports had suggested Li was in talks to play a supporting role in the remake.
The 46-year-old Li made his screen debut as a teenager playing the leading character, a monk named Jue Yuan, in "The Shaolin Temple" film which was named after the legendary martial-arts center in China's Henan Province.
The remake is rumored to begin later this year on a budget of 200 million yuan (US $29.3 million) with the Shaolin Temple allowing the film to be shot on location.
KungFuCinema.com spread the rumor yesterday that Chinese singer/actor Andy Lau was also in talks to the star in the remake which is entitled "New Shaolin Temple" from a script by Alan Yuen, who wrote Jackie Chan's "Rob-B-Hood."
The original film made Li a popular martial arts star in China while inspiring many youngsters to begin training at the Shaolin Temple.
Li went on to star in several "Once Upon a Time in China" films, in which he portrayed the legendary martial arts hero Wong Fei-Hung. He also co-starred with Jackie Chan in last year's "The Forbidden Kingdom" and appeared with Brendan Fraser in "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor."
In his next film "The Expendables", Li will co-star with Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham as part of a team of mercenaries who travel to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator. The film will be released in April 23, 2010.

I think aside from Wu Jing and Xing Yu, they should also bring Xie Miao and Ashton Chen (aka Shi Xiao-Long) in the film. Both Xing Yu and Chen are former training Shaolin monks in real-life so their skills would be of good use here. I would have the younger Xie Miao and Chen play students of Li's character...at least that's what I would think.

Okay, here's an update on the movie.
-Jet Li is NOT in the movie.
-The movie is no longer called NEW SHAOLIN TEMPLE, but just SHAOLIN.
-Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse, and Wu Jing will star in the film with REAL Shaolin monks.
-Jackie Chan is making a cameo appearance in the film.
-Directed by Benny Chan and written by Chan's current writer of choice, Alan Yuen (New Police Story, Robin-B-Hood)
Plot:
China is plunged into strife as feuding warlords try to expand their power by warring over neighboring lands. Fuelled by his success on the battlefield, young and arrogant Hao Jie sneers at Shaolin's masters when he beats one of them in a duel. But the pride comes before a fall. When his own family is wiped out by a rival warlord, Hao Jie is forced to take refuge with the monks. As the civil unrest spreads and the people suffer, Hao Jie and the Shaolin masters are forced to take a fiery stand against the evil warlords. They launch a daring plan or rescue and escape.

Jet Li not being in it sucks, he deserves at least a small role as a mentor or something. On the other hand, this doesn't really sound like Shaolin Temple so it won't matter. Hopefully this movie will be good because I like Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse, and Wu Jing....Wu Jing NEEDS another good film.

Don't care much for Andy Lau, especially not in martial arts movies.
Nic Tse is a fine young actor (not great, but certainly watchable), but obviously not a martial artist.
Wu Jing is a very talented martial artist, but seems to have a talent for picking mediocre/crappy movies to star in.
Benny Chan is a horrible director.
And Jackie making a cameo!? Jackie stopped being relevant 15 years orso ago, I'm sad to say. Who cares if he makes a cameo or not!?

Cameo? From what I read, I was under the impression that Jackie is going to at least have a co-starring role alongside the others
JACKIE CHAN, WU JING, NICHOLAS TSE, FAN BINGBING AND ANDY LAU TO STAR IN SHAOLIN!
http://twitchfilm.net/news/2009/10/jackie-chan-wu-jing-nicholas-tse-fan-bingbing-and-andy-lau-to-star-in-shaolin.php
Shaolin will feature a much anticipated stellar casting of top international and Asian stars led by Jackie Chan, Andy Lau and Nicholas Tse. Joining them will be mainland China's new leading lady of the big screen Fan Bingbing. Other members of the cast include martial arts star Wu Jing, Yu Shaoqun (Forever Enthralled) and thousands of Shaolin disciples.
Shooting for Shaolin is expected to start end of 2009 with a slated release for late 2010.
----------------------------------------
Also on Jackie's official website the news post gives me the impression he has a major role in the film
http://www.jackiechan.com/news/798748--Jackie-to-Begin-New-Film-in-China
"On October 22nd, Jackie attended the opening ceremony for his latest film, New Shaolin Temple. The scene was chaotic as reporters and fans pushed in for a closer view of Jackie and costars Andy Lau, Nic Tse, and Fan Bing Bing.
The $30 million film will be directed by Jackie's longtime collaborator Benny Chan, with Corey Yuen doing the action choreography. The movie is set in the early 20th century and will feature Nicholas Tse will as a wealthy young man who finds refuge in the temple after a tragic incident in his family. He meets his kung fu master, played by Jackie, in the temple.
Filming is set to begin in late 2009 with an eye on an early 2010 release. Jackie has just wrapped up filming of The Kung Fu Kid, which costars Jaden Smith, son of Hollywood sensation Will Smith."
----------------------------------------
Yeah it has been a while since he did a real martial arts film like this, not so much comedy or fantasy
Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse, Wu Jing, Fan Bingbing at the Shaolin Temple to kick off filming of NEW SHAOLIN TEMPLE aka SHAOLIN

http://wu-jing.org/happenings/archives/721-Benny-Chan-Narrates-A-New-Story-of-Shaolin.html#extended
but some of the most interesting information in this article has nothing to do with the Shaolin film.. he talks about "Chinese Zodiac" ("Armour of God 3")
Jackie Chan indicates that while he has known the abbot Shi Yong Xin for more than 10 years, and he had expressed interests in working him Jackie Chan says that he is not likely to shave his head as he's doing another film, Chinese Zodiac, which is about treasure hunting, that begins production in January 2010.
Originally, he was wavering, turned it down after accepting due to Chinese Zodiac, that has been in works for 5, 6 years. But Albert Yeung told him that the film needed him, that's why he took up this project. However, it's by and large a cameo.
He says that he'd be directing Chinese Zodiac, for the script is really excellent, and the cast will be new blood predominantly, with his friends like Louis Koo making guest appearances. It will be shot on location in Europe, such as France.

Chan's not making a cameo anymore. He is playing one of the lead roles. He will play a chef at the Shaolin Temple who is a martial arts master but tends not to use it much until he trains Nicholas Tse and Andy Lau's characters.
Nicholas was handpicked by Abbot Shi Yong Xin for the role of the spoiled brat who gets a new lease on life once he hides in the temple and becomes an expert in Chin-Na (Joint Locks). Andy Lau starts out as a villainous warlord's son, but he will eventually turn good and train with Tse for the forces of good. Fan Bingbing will play Lau's wife and according to Lau, Wu Jing is playing the main villain. Xing Yu will also co-star and is excited because he was actually a real-life Shaolin monk as a kid.
Corey Yuen is going to choreograph the film's action sequences and training the actors in certain skills. Tse, who has been quite the non-formal superkicker, will be working on Chin-Na and Yu Shao Qiang will be training in kicking for the film.

Hopefully Andy Lau gets to do some good fighting. House of Flying Daggers is the best fighting performance I've seen from him in recent years. I think a lot of people doubt Andy Lau's screen fighting skills, but that just means you obviously haven't seen Lucky Stars Go Places! Also does anyone remember that vid where he almost beats up some a-hole at one of his recent concerts? Andy Lau is a badass.

Remember it? I bragged about it to some co-workers and they actually praised Andy for what he did and here's the good news about Lau in terms of Shaolin. He has been training for three months in Shaolin Kung Fu and accepted the role because he wanted to work with Benny Chan again, who directed Andy in one of his breakthrough films, A MOMENT OF ROMANCE. Plus, he liked the script as well.
Oh and Andy was doubled for the acrobatic flips in Lucky Stars Go Places, but did a bunch of his own kicking. The double is a familiar face, Chin Kar-Lok, who also doubled Andy in Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars.

Definitely. His screen fighting has always been solid. Rdenn do you think shapes are getting more popular again? MAybe one day we can get back to having more than 2 or 3 shapes movies a year from HK.
Al that's good to hear about his training. He has to be getting on in age, he's been around for awhile. It'll be good to see him give one last really good fighting performance. Oh, and he also did his own punching in Lucky Stars:wink:

Lets see what happens, so much potential hopefully it will be fulfilled..
Would be good to see a general return of quality old skool style Kung Fu movies with fight scenes containing more than 5-6 moments in a take, restrained wirework etc.
There must be more than a few young talented martial artists that could work with experienced directors & action choreographers, just need to add old skool marital artist/ actors to play master/teacher/roles.
Imagine Yang Sze (Bolo) playing the master who teaches the not looking style or HJL teaching kicking, the possibilities are endless

Update:
SHAOLIN
The film is currently into production. Jackie Chan will be joining the shoot after the Lunar New Year. Also appearing in the film are original Shaolin Temple trilogy actor Yu Hai and "Clubfoot" himself, Xiong Xin-Xin, who gets to fight Andy Lau in the film.
Wu Jing spent a week at the Shaolin Temple to train for his role in the film and got praise for his hard work and professionalism.
Full article: Wu-Jing.org (http://www.wu-jing.org/happenings/archives/774-Wu-Jings-Sojourn-at-Shaolin-Temple.html)
It looks like a tentative release date for SHAOLIN could be late 2010/Chinese New Year 2011.
Andy Lau has trained for two months for the role, having four trainers in the forms of Corey Yuen, Richard Hung (Yuen Tak), Reverend Shi Yong-Zhi of the Shaolin Temple and Yong-Zhi's former student and current Hong Kong action film star Xing Yu (aka Yan Neng).

Official Plot of the film, according to Wu-Jing.org.
China is plunged into strife as feuding warlords try to expand their power by warring over neighboring lands. Fuelled by his success on the battlefield, "young" and arrogant warlord Hou Jie (Andy Lau) sneers at Shaolin masters when he beats Jing Neng (Wu Jing) in a duel. But the pride comes before a fall.
Soon, Hou Jie is betrayed by Cao Man (Nicholas Tse), who is the 2nd-in-command and his buddy, and walks right into a trap and gets waylaid by rival warlord Song Hu (Shi Xiong Hong). To make matter worse, his wife (Fan Bing Bing) deserts him, while his child is killed. The crestfallen and heartbroken Hou Jie seeks refuge at Shaolin.
Hou Jie is on the verge of giving up his life when he becomes acquainted with the cheery Shaolin cook (Jackie Chan) who helps him see through life. He also resolves his conflicts with fellow monks Jing Neng, Jing Hai (Yu Shao Qun) and Jing Kong (Xing Yu). After becoming enlightened, he takes the tonsure.
As the civil unrest spreads and the people suffer, Hou Jie and the Shaolin masters are forced to take a fiery stand against the treacherous warlord Cao Man and his collaborator Suo Xiang Tu (Xiong Xin Xin). Led by Hou Jie, they launch a daring operation.

The trailer doesn't give us an awful lot but it's gotten me excited. The best news? I didn't see any wires and I'm certainly thankful for that! Camera work looks good, the drama looks heavy and the little bit of Wu Jing fighting Andy Lau we saw looked pretty solid.
I hope Xing Yu gets properly utilized this time since the movie is about shaolin. Up until now, he's been in big-scale productions and been nothing more than wasted each time.

Looks promising in terms of story and cinematography. Really can't say anything about the fights yet. I just hope it will be great. The trailer seems to be more focussed on the drama of it all, instead of on the martial arts. Let's hope the movie didn't neglect that very important aspect of any martial arts flick.

You know. That's exactly what I was thinking. Honesty, I don't think you're going to see much in the way of martial arts, in martial arts movies these days. Sure they hire a peking opera based action director but they usually cast a few martial screen fighters sthat don't get much screen time and the fights aren't memorable.
Martial arts movies from china are just drama movies with music and cinematograohy forefront and really good action and fights not the basis. Actors are more the stars of martial pictures these days than martial actors.
Xing Yu wil never do anything that shows what he can do unless it's a smaller b flick.
If you want martial arts and fight action, it's coming from Jaa and Panna in Thailand. China isn't interested in that aspect for their martial pictures.

I thought the trailer looked pretty decent and I think I will check this one out once it comes on DVD.
I think its looks promising. I just hope it doesn` turn out to be a film like Bodyguard and assassins, where it`s promoted as a action film and tricked into buying it, but in reality it`s just a drama film with a few action scenes.

Found out that XANDA star Sang Wei-Lin has joined the cast of SHAOLIN. He will be playing a sidekick to Xiong Xin-Xin's character and his style is actually Sanda if I read the article right. He was supposed to be on the set for only one week, but Benny Chan was impressed and had Sang stay for a 3-week shoot, which is completed. Sang was recommended to Chan by both Corey Yuen and Yuen Tak (Richard Hung)

New Benny Chan interview at www.wu-jing.org
Why did you opted for the era of warlords?
Benny Chan: The story concerning thirteen cudgel monks rescuing Tang prince has been adapted too many times. So, I checked with the abbot, the notable legends of Shaolin Temple in the past 1500 years, there was this legend, concerning a warlord ransacking Shaolin Temple to look for another warlord, before setting it ablaze. Being partial to this legend, I settled for the warlords era. That period was very turbulent, China was already facing foreign invasion, yet the Chinese were still fighting among themselves.
I had thought of shooting a period film set in more mundane era, there won't be so much conflicts, the good guys are good, the bad are bad, and let them clash against each other. But, why picked such a traumatic point, that highlights the controversies? For only when you tell a movie in this way, would it be dramatic. But, we won't focus too much on this, for the main focus is still on Shaolin.
After the slightly over the first 10 minutes, Andy Lau would turn from a warlord to a monk, this is the life I wish to tell, there isn't much connection with the period, so, I don't wish to be distinct about the background. Besides, the audience watch this film for entertainment, they won't pay much attention to politics.
You mentioned Andy Lau's life, what exactly is the theme?
Benny Chan: Shaolin often says they advocates spirit of martial arts, first you have to reflect on yourself, before you could elevate your wushu level, and finally, you would reach new heights in terms of kungfu and humanity. This kind of advocacy of martial spirit, was done before in other Shaolin Temple related films, so in Shaolin, I wish to talk about how the protagonist Andy Lau turn from a warlord to a monk, and infuse the elements of martial arts spirit there, extending from inner realisation, from within the heart, to external application on martial arts physically.
This is not an easy subject, for Shaolin's main theme is Zen. Amidst the turbulences, humans are especially vulnerable, there are many things that could be reflected through Andy Lau's character, allowing you to realise many things about life. His character initially wields great power, but he loses everything overnight, and heads for Shaolin, eventually finds what he wants. And Nicholas Tse is trapped in Andy Lau's former life, Andy Lau notices Nicholas Tse walking on his previous path, and wishes to liberate him.
Why did work with Corey Yuen and Yuen Tak instead of your longtime collaborator Nicky Li?
Benny Chan:Nicky Li's action design is modern big action scenes, like car stunts, explosions. For period films, I would prefer Corey Yuen, Yuen Tak, they are more experienced in forms and routines. They have been doing kungfu films for many years, so I believe they'll have their unique views and ideas.
There were many martial arts exponents like Jet Li in Shaolin Temple, what can we expect from the cast members' performances in this film?
Benny Chan: Our cast are somewhat different from Jet Li, we are employing more realistic ways to shoot, no flying, Andy Lau has been training for months for this film, he is now able to execute somewhat authentic Shaolin fist. But I won't compare him to Jet Li, for the story is different, the director's approach is different, an actor's way of acting and interpreting a role is different, etc. They have their own strengths, but having a different final look and feel, it's not easy to compare.
I heard that Andy Lau's fighting styles are different depending on his personalities, is this a way of extolling martial spirit through the choreography?
Benny Chan: His fighting styles are different when he is evil, and when he is benevolent, demonstrating the duality, the conflicts within his heart. When he is a warlord, he only thinks of trouncing, killing his opponents, after turning over the new leaf, when he fights, he only aims at subduing the other parties.
止 (Cessation) and 戈 (dagger-axe, a type of polearm used in ancient Chinese wars) form the word wu 武, it's a yardstick for true self-control and willpower. For example, in the final fight, Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse, and Wu Jing as well, each of them is approaching his fight with a different mentality. So, when we shoot Shaolin martial arts in this film, our goal is to bring out the essence and spirit of martial arts.
We'll be showing various styles of martial arts authentically, such as Seven-star Fist, Eagle Claw, cudgels, I don't want it to be too flowery, I don't like flying, so the fights are on the realistic side, there are very little special effects, except for the scene with Shaolin Temple being burned.
What do you think of Nicholas Tse's acting?
Benny Chan: Nicholas Tse's acting has improved a lot, for when you act, you need to have real world experiences too, now that he has grown up, when he was 19, he worked with me before, 11 years have passed, and now, he is already a father, he has improved greatly, having so many years of experiences in life, he still works extremely hard, he still has room for improvement.
Since this is set in the Republican period, would that entail firearms being used, apart from traditional martial arts?
Benny Chan: Indeed, but to a martial arts practitioner, the appearance of firearms is a painful issue. For example, I'm well-versed in Shaolin kungfu, but if my opponent draws a gun and point at me, I still have to freeze.
How would it affect your portrayal of the exquisiteness of traditional kungfu?
Benny Chan: You could stop the act, but not the benign heart. In the film, the war refugees are hiding in Shaolin Temple, I don't think anyone has done something like this, treating Shaolin as peacekeeping vigilante force. Faced with terrorists, what do I do? You have a gun, a gun has six bullets, but Shaolin Temple has a hundred monks. Even if you were to kill us, for the sake of justice, we would still stand up against you.
This is where the paradox lies, but after solving this paradox, the eventual means of resolving the problem is still through martial arts. The film's main theme is Shaolin martial arts, the good and the bad, they are all skilled masters of martial arts, so it's very natural for them to drop the guns, for guns won't solve problems between people, who is better, you have to use your own abilities to determine.
Any major hurdles in filming?
Benny Chan: Countless problems, yesterday, it was sunny, but today, it is raining nonstop, because of rain, many days were wasted. Everyday, we watch the rain pouring down, and are very impatient and anxious, for everything is money.

The movie looks like it could be good, but the fights don't look like anything special. Hopefully they are holding back a lot with what they showed in the trailer.

Shaolin Temple, jointly with several places of interest in the historic Mt. Songshan in Dengfeng City, Henan Province in Central China, was recently inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage. Listed as Tian Di Zhi Zhong (literally means Center of the World) Historical Architecture Group. At the same time, "The Danxia Landform of China" was also named as World Heritage Site, which consists of six geologically-related Danxia areas including Mt. Danxia and other five mountains in southeastern China.

LOL....I think this was taken out of context...I think he meant because he's been doing MA for films so long that he can pick it up with ease...We can pretty much call Nicholas this generation's Bryan Leung "Beardy" due to his transition from non-MA to MA action star. That's IMO.

Saw it. Jet Li was great! He really made this remake. Don't know what it would have been without him.
Movie was fine. Andy was good, as he always is these days. Could have done with either someone else in Nic's role(someone older), or him not hamming it up through the whole thing. His character and the white guy were jarring in that no one else's acting was like that. Too much ham. It's like he didn't know how to play the character and Chan didn't show him the way.
Action is forgettable across the board for the most part. Jack's stuff came off the best and the cleanest, too me. Lots of floating and wires. Pretty much swing and hit choreography, that honestly fits this particular picture. No a complaint but it did nothing for me. It's like the way the action in Bodyguards and Assassins fit the movie but doesn't do anything for you. Lau and Tse were ok for as long as it lasted in their end fight.
Looks like lots was cut. Stuff from the trailer is not to be seen. No Wu Jing vs Lau fight from the trailer. The many monks training in the snow is also not there.
Like I said, movie was fine, as were the performances, save two. Jet was great. Action fit, I guess, but is already forgotten. No complaints, save for the floating based wire work. I hate that crap. Should be seen as a movie and not a kf movie.

SHAOLIN has opened across China, Singapore etc..it opens in HK today..
But just wondering what film Baron K saw...with Jet Li, Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse, etc?
Jackie is an extended cameo, Andy Lau & Nicholas Tse are the two main leads, with solid support from Wu Jing while Xing yu, Hung yan-yan etc also pop up
And which white guy are you talking about?

The white guy I was referring to was an officer. The highest ranking one. The leader. He's not good. He's barely in the movie but he doesn't fit with his bad acting.
Are there any mods for this forum? No, Jet isn't in the movie. Andy is very good, Nic is not the acting equal this movie called for.

After reading the expected trouncing of SHAOLIN in the film review section of the South China Morning Post I went to see this yesterday on a huuuge screen in a Kowloon mall theatre and was suitably impressed with, hmm… the first two parts of this 140 minute epic. Just like in Yuen Woo Ping’s recent TRUE LEGEND the somewhat forced final showdown was dripping with over-the-top pathos and proved to be something of a predictable letdown (evil Brits pillaging Chinese antiquities and killing indiscriminately… Well, British gunboat diplomacy in the Middle Kingdowm was devilish and they were robbing invaluable treasures left, right & center, but to go as far as having the island gweilos shelling Shaolin Si and turning the monastery into rubble… oh well, its just a movie, innit?)
Other than that the cinematography was simply awesome and so were the acting performances of basically all of the leads. Outstanding in particular Fan Bing Bing as the warlord’s grief-stricken wife and Jackie Chan as the cranky cook who denies knowing about kung-fu… Well, you’re almost lulled into believing they would just use him for a dramatic role until he gets his one hilariously funny fight scene that really goes against the deadly serious gist of the film, but is nontheless one of the highlights here. “Stir-fry ‘em like rice noodles!“, yells one of the Shaolin bambinos... and Jackie grabs a gigantic wok and does it. Gun salute for that, big man!
By the way, Jackie’s part was waaay more than just a cameo.
And, sure, Nick Tse overacted as usual but I thought that he made the most of his manical villian role and was definitely not a mis-cast.
Corey Yuen’s action choreography was inspired for the most part, sometimes insanely brilliant, and I truly marvel how anyone can weigh in with assessments like “the action is forgettable across the board”. But then that very same somebody spotted Jet Li in this flick and I sure as hell didn’t… unless the man appeared during the approximately 45 seconds I vacated my seat to relief myself…
Oh, and to anyone who’s already determined to invest in the DVD or BD (I certainly will!): make sure to AVOID the presumably forthcoming British release of this because there are so many horse trippings here that its guaranteed to be cut for “animal cruelty”!

First, this thread is whack. I am more than happy to write another review if this was locked. Too much confusion and nonsense.
Second, I only watched without subtitles.
Third, slight spoiler under STORY
Action
Though it's no reign of assassin, ip man, or true legend, I think there's more than enough action. The fight scenes aren't long, but there are plenty of nice cool ones. Much of the actions are kinda like US movies, meaning you got horse chases, explosions, etc. Not your typical 5 minute fight scenes. WAYYY more action than Karate Kid 2010...at least 5 times....so you get a sense how much butt kicking there is.
Some of the wire effects are corny and fake looking, but overall, it's great.
Story
I don't understand Chinese and no English subs, but DAMN, this story was enjoyable. It's one of those movies that you don't need subs to enjoy. You just get it. It was done well. Maybe it's a crappy movie with subs, but by the way it looks, it's a very good movie.
However, it is a stereotypical film where guy loses it all, and he finds himself. Think True Legend, Reign of Assassins, Fearless, etc. That's why it was so easy to understand.
Other
It's a beautiful film. Very well done.
Conclusion
I was not disapointed at all. I was scared this might be another messed up film like Donnie Yen's "Chen Zhen"...or whatever it's called. This movie not only looks like a fairly good kick butt "martial arts" film, but a great story to go along with it. For those of you who think the action is not enough, I think you'll find that the story fills the gaps. I would not be surprised if this film was paraded all over the golden globes and oscars or whatever because the story is there.
I look forward to the DVD and english subs.

My Updated Review
Okay guys, I have seen it with subtitles and I think I can give a complete review. Unfortunately, it's a little negative.
Is it a good movie? Yes! Would I recommend it? Definitely! Is there a lot of fighting/action? More than enough! If you're one of those that just want to see action, no worries! There is enough action. Not too many long fighting scenes, but it's not like Chen Zhen where fighting seems like it's nonexisting. Enough figing to get your martial arts fix.
Do I love the movie? Nope! I fell in love with True Legend, Ip Man, Tony Jaa films, and Reign of Assassins...but I didn't here. The first part of the film was awesome, but it kinda went down hill after that. They were doing a good job of personalizing Andy Lau, but I think they lost it halfway. There was a part of the film where he disapeared and I forgot about him. The movie was all over the place. The last fight scene was just illogical. The fighting was awesome, but to fight was illogical. It started becoming corny to me.
Where I thought they really dropped the ball was that this was a good opportunity to teach about Buddhism and Shaolin...but they didn't. You just see them fight, train, and help others, but you just didn't learn anything about why. They could have used christian priests or any other religious groups, and threw in fighting. Shaolin shouldn't have been the title of this film.
The best movie I can compare this film to is Fearless. Fearless was better because it was very personal and there was a lot of charm in the film...a better story..or better told. Shaolin had better fighting. Fearless is better overall, but Shaolin is better halfway...then it got corny.

So has anyone here seen the 44 minutes (!) of deleted scenes on the Well Go USA release of this film?
You know how when Pixar releases a movie on DVD, they add a bunch of new featurettes for some of the side characters? That's basically what these are for the two monks played by Xing Yu and Yu Shaoqun. They both have complete stories told in the deleted scenes. Turns out they had a much harder time accepting Andy Lau. Lau gets some time in these scenes too, including one moment where a warlord's son comes back and tries to kill him. Oh and there are several deleted action scenes! They are good too, though unfinished. This film could have been 3 hours long and still been good!
