Ok, I love Tae Kwon do, I've admired it for a very long time. I recently seen a sign at a local YMCA, I go to and I've decided to take it. I've met the instructor he's a american, and I hope that I do we'll in the class. At first, I was thinking of doing tai chi, but I can't do the time frame. I also am taking a kick boxing class at the same time, so I hope I'll be in good shape. I promised myself, that if I don't like this class, I 'll move on to another dojo. Please tell me what you think!

Hey little brother! I only took TKD (Moo Duk Kwon) for a short time (around 17 years old) but it's a cool style. Good luck in your training, and keep us up-to-date on your progress here on this thread.

I grew up with Tae Kwon Do... just make sure the instructor isn't wearing anything resembling an American Flag

Always train in other styles, and always complete the style you feel the most comfortable with...this sounds funny i know, but you will understand as you keep training. be versatile...and be open to anything. with TKD there are alot of things you may feel you need to disregard (and by NO means am i speaking ill of TKD...its an amazing art...i myself have trained for years in tkd), but by understanding this, you will progress as a martial artist. the flexibility and balance you will acquire is second to none, providing you are with the right instructor.

well bruce...it's pretty easy to tell people what you WOULD do in a fight, but the truth is, not to many people know what they would do given the confrontation, no matter how trained someone is. techniques have to become instinctive. as much as I myself stay away from high kicks, they have and will work. and golden sword is right. alot of fighters now DON"T expect it, seeing as many mma/jkd fighters still have a one dimensional gameplan (funny right? the art teaches you to cover every base......). if you can close the gap and go for the choke....good for you. I would probably do the same, but I wouldn't be telling anyone about it. besides, I don't think goldensword has issued any challenge. let's try not to make this personal. I think both of you have the right idea

Thanks, for the support guys! I start soon! I hope I can tell you guys good things and that I'll be learning to fight! Really, Im already flexible. About a few years ago, I got beat up walking home from school by a group of kids. I then went home and looked at myself in the mirror and seen a skinny half white/ asian kid and laughed. After that I searched for inspiration, and I began to work out. One day, my uncle brought " Fists of Fury " over, I loved it. I wanted to be the next bruce lee! At first, I trained to be like him, finger tip push ups, doing his footwork, and streching to kick like him. I usually review all of his movies, and try to copy them. But I know in a real fight, I'd be throwen to the ground, but I might land a few in hopefully. I hope this class will take my kicks to a new level, or adleast teach me something lol.

Good for you, but never be ashamed who you are, lots of skinny kids all over the world, being younger is tough, we all had to go through it, so Chiba Up:smile: things are different as you get older but it doesn't get any easier.

Take MA for yourself though, not to learn how to fight or else your taking it for the wrong reasons, I can see in your pic that your flexable so you should be great at Tae Kwon Do, I believe Chinatown Kid has taken it for a long time he could probably give you some pointers if you ask him.

We'll now, Im not that skinny anymore. I'm more built, but that was in 8th grade and now I'm going into 11th. I've trained hard, and I hope this class will increase my skills. I weight lift now and I think I'm ok size for my height. But thank you and I hope everything goes great!

Yes, good luck little brother.

Oh, and DragonSword- apparently you are now GoldenSword?!

Who is Dragonsword? You mean Goldenfist Bob? Anyways Goldenfist, you are one-of-a-kind type guy. I also believe
it will serve you well to take a class like this, your obviously dedicated to the idea of discipline and learning which is
also great. There is a proverb, some have said it was Bruce Lee who first spoke. In a larger sense i do not see how
it would matter if he did or not since the truth was long before he (or anyone) came into existence and is archetypal.

“He who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool—shun him. He who knows not and knows that he knows
not is a child—teach him. He who knows and knows not that he knows is asleep—wake him. He who knows and knows
that he knows is wise—follow him.”

Good luck Ryan, glad to see you are still flashing the signature i made.

goldensword is ok with me. your right jiujitsu77 sometimes situation in fights change.

i meant goldensword no disrespect. any one with the joker as an avatar...,. my favorite villian of all tme is cool with me. thanks for the advice btw.

I know who Goldenfist is! I was making a joke about jiujitsu77 and Bruce Lee both mistakenly referring to DragonSword (who posted on this thread) by the incorrect name GoldenSword.

If you become proficent in TKD you might want to change your name to Goldenfeet.
Imo if you want to become a great kicker than TKD is one of the best styles to study. I'm now supplementing some grappling to go along with my TKD by learning Judo. I would recommend sticking with one style exclusively until you have gained a good amount of proficency though before you start learning a different one so you can put all your focus on one thing at a time.
