check for the yakuza stuff from fukasaku
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinji_Fukasaku

I also like the young and dangerous series from hong kong.

also check for a movie called Pale Flower
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056327/

I mostly like Fukasaku for the energy and chaotic feel that he brought to his films

How is your Johnnie To (http://www.criterionforums.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=657), Seijun Suzuki or Ringo Lam knowledge? Are you interested in all Triad and/or Yakuza films? Do you mind drama or are you more interested in "bullet ballet" type features?

Have you seen Exiled or Full Contact?

There's SO many....best to read through each category. You'll learn a lot! Also, go back to the main KFC site and start reading the reviews of the movies. Mark has written almost a 1000 reviews and IMO there spot on.

Check out Shoot Em Up. Absolute insanity. I wish all movies were made in this style. Never takes itself seriously, just pure entertainment.

HERO OF TOMORROW
ANGEL (All 3 films)

I've rarely been disappointed by one of Beat's movies.

No Fukasaku? epic Fail! J/K. I'm sure you've seen Bullet in the head already, as well as Mission by To.

You may be right my friend. I haven't seen it since it first came out, but I remember thinking it was really good.

It's great to see you posting again brother- brings a smile to my face! I was going to say so earlier, but I didn't want to jinx it and have you disappear again! LOL :xd:

Everything cool with you?

One thing that is impossible for any member here (and anywhere else) is to see everything by everyone. By the questions he has stated I do not think he has seen those three (I haven't seen Fukasaku :)). Having said that I'm a huge fan of THE MISSION so I second it. It is not always the easiest to get, but it is one of To's most important films. But with To I could easily recommend 10 or more movies (though I see there is three on nicklord1's list: add PTU, THE MISSION, RUNNING OUT OF TIME, THROWDOWN :D).

To get a better understand of Johnnie To and John Woo it is important to watch a few of the films that inspired them. The Melville films are quite excellent.

I will then pretentiously recommend (several of these are more caper films):
Le samouraļ (1967): Jean Pierre Melville
Le cercle rouge (1970): Jean Pierre Melville
Bob le flambeur (1956): Jean Pierre Melville
Riffifi (1955): Jules Dassin
The Asphalt Jungle (1950): John Huston

Are there any fans of Wanted (2008)? I found this surprisingly good (not realistic of course). I'm hesitant of recommending, but I liked many elements of this film.

Hey Brother, do yourself a favor and check out some of Fukasaku's stuff!

I forgot to mention THE MISSION, but I completely agree with what you said. Great movie.

yeah. To got a lot of great ones under his belt. I recomended The Mission because it was one of my first introductions to the man and because everything I could think of had been mentioned.

I know several of his films I have and/or want to get. Looking at his oeuvre at IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0297935/) Battle Royale (which I have) and the Yakuza Papers (which I do not) are the ones I should watch. My problem is that I just haven't been as much into post 1970 Japanese Cinema and been concentrating more on HK this past year.

So much to watch so little time :D.

get/watch these:

Yakuza Papers set
Graveyard of Honor
Yakuza Graveyard
Sympathy for the Underdog

the yakuza papers you will have to watch twice probably just because of the sheer number of characters that come and go and all the damn families and clans.

it came out in 1995. is by Takashi Ishii just in case there are those Ishii completists out there. I remember not liking it very much but I should revisit it. but whatever it is, Beat is not the lead, he's like the 6th man, but probably the one with the most recognition. and I don't remember him being featured in the movie that much (time wise). but is been a long time since I've seen it.

Oh hell yes. If you want a SUPERcharged movie, look no further than Deadly OUtlaw. One of my favorite movies. And greatly helped by the amazing soundtrack. Best soundtrack of all time? Yes. I still need to see Full Metal Yakuza, Ichi and BAttle Royale, but FUdoh and Deadly OUtlaw, good stuff.

the very beginning where the yakuza boss is walking with his men and at the same time the hitman is running at him all in slow motion, and the boss is crazy looking with the white hair, kamono and the tattoos coming out from under his sleeves, damn this is one the best and most intense openings of any movie eveeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrr. it still send chills down my spine.

I totally agree!!! How about the scene where they are trying to read the instructions to the rocket launcher? I was laughing pretty hard. Actually I better not start listing off good scenes from this movie, there's too many!

Hi Nick, as far as I'm aware the following titles that you've listed are available in the UK -

City on Fire - Hong Kong Legends
Yakuza Graveyard - Eureka Entertainment
Wild Search - MIA Video

Off the list you've provided if you had to buy just one then definitely go for SPL (Killzone).

If you enjoyed the Chaser you'll also love Public Enemy, which is still available in the UK from Tartan Video under it Asia Extreme label...best get your hands on it fast though as like the Hong Kong Legends label Tartan also went under a while ago, so they're titles will become increasingly hard to find.
