I was curious to know what Asian movie was the first one to use the much maligned CGI blood...and can anyone think of a movie where the technique has actually been used successfully?

For me the earliest movie I can remember using it was the 1999 South Korean movie 'Nowhere To Hide', when the assassin slashes the victims hand in the opening sequence.

A couple of other early movies which I seem to recall employing the technique quite well are Japan's 'Battle Royale' (2000) and 'Ichi the Killer' (2001)...but what was the first Hong Kong movie to use it?

Didn't The Blade ('95) have CGI blood? I'm not sure.
Maybe Stormriders?

although the look of the blood in Exiled is unique, I don't think it was cgi. even if you watch the making-of, and behind the scenes, you'll see that Anthony Wong has his coat all loaded up with squib charges. Vengeance uses the same blood as Exiled, I think it must just be some kind of powdery/mist type of squib, which looks different from the average squib effects. however, it's possible that a mixture of cgi and practical effects were used for both. Flash Point definitely used a mixture of cgi blood and practical squib effects. for example, the scene where Xing Yu shoots Austin Wai in the head, you could clearly tell it was cgi, and it didn't look very convincing...thankfully it was shown from a distance. but in the finale, it looked like all of the blood was practical effects/squibs, and it looked much better. Fatal Move also had a mixture, but went way overboard with the cg blood, which generally looked pretty bad. Takeshi Kitano's Zatoichi used entirely cgi blood, and I thought the results turned out quite well.

I think it looks retarded. It never looks like it's a part of the film, of the shot. It has that overlay look to it that is completely distracting. It doesn't match of fit the color and texture of the shot, scenery. "Analog" blood matches because they are in the shot as it happens.

I agree with VenomsFan that if CGI blood is used to subtle effect than it can really enhance a scene...however there are so few examples of it being done well that it`s much easier to write it off as a bad idea.

I remember reading that the scene in Ichi the Killer where the walls of the room are covered in blood is completely CGI, and to look at it you would never know.

The problem seems to come when directors try to use CGI blood when somebody gets shot, and I agree with BaronK that it has never been done even close to convincingly. Unless the effect in Exiled is CGI which I agree is really well done, but I have a feeling also that it is squibs that are being used.

Overall I still think the squib effect is powerful and looks 100 times better than any CGI effect...can you imagine watching Hard Boiled or the Killer and all the effects were CGI!?
