dir John Hyams w/Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Andrei Arlovski

Freedom fighter/terrorists take the Russian president's two kids hostage and also threaten a nuclear disaster (they're holed up in Chernobyl). The ace in their hole is a NGU (Next Generation Universal Soldier) controled by a mercenary rogue scientist. The NGU is damn near an OMAC (One Man Army Corp). Russia/US respond by pulling the first generation Universal Soldiers out of deep freeze.

It's a franchise reboot. John Hyams is Peter Hyams (TIME COP) son. Peter was the director of photography (according to John) or cinematographer (according to IMDB) and the movie looks great. They mostly shot at Sophia, Bulgaria, at an abaondened steel factory which doubles for Chernobyl. John Hyams choreographed the fights which are plentiful and brutal, particularly one rematch. Also interesting is that a Universal Soldier can be the monster and the hero and the villain all in one movie. The character are more or less one dimensional and there's nothing particularly original in there, but if Universal Soldier: A New Beginning were a cake and you like cake, it's good cake.

Same thing... and I've never seen a great looking Peter Hyams movie so this should be something new.

Did you see a test screening?

It was the last Secret Screening at Fantastic Fest. It's supposed to be released theatrically February, 2010.

It's a capsule review I guess.

How do Jean-Claude and Dolph fare?

Do they still cut it as action guys?

Jean-Claude and Dolph both fare well. No one thought to ask whether they both did all their stunt work, but the way their fights are shot, it looked like it was mostly (if not all) them. At least for this film they still cut it as action guys.

Sounds like a direct to dvd movie. Can't see this one doing to well in the theaters, atleast in US anyway. I'd still definitely like to check it out though. The original is great.

OK I got to watch this movie tonight and I thought it was the best of the series, Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski was totally awesome in this movie! I really hope to see him in some more movies. His fighting scenes were off the hook, very realistic & brutal. I just wish he got to fight with Dolph Lundgren in the movie. And Dolph look better than ever. For a direct to DVD movie it is better than some of the mainstream movies out today.

DragonSword; I agree with you on that, I just wish we saw more fight scenes with Dolph! But Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski was a fresh new villain that I hope to see in a lot more movies. He is a damn good fight and quick as hell. The casting for this movie was very good.

I saw this film recently and I really enjoyed it. I must say it had a 'weird' feel about it. Can't quite put my finger on it though!!! (I know that sounds a bit stupid!)
There were some cool action scenes, and Dolph vs Van damme was cool to see again. The fact tha it sounds like Dolph was 'written into' the film rings true, as he 'appears' and 'disappears' pretty bluntly. I'm looking forward to seeing him again in the upcoming 'Expendibles' and likewise, i'm looking forward to seeing what Van Damme has to offer in 'Eagle Path' and 'The Tower'
