I'm not a big Van Damme fan at all, but I thought The Shepherd: Border Patrol was pretty good.

It's good to see I'm not the only person who enjoyed Van Damme's efforts with Hong Kong directors Ringo Lam & Tsui Hark, although I've yet to see 'In Hell'....I actually enjoyed 'Double Team' (although as Kwok Choi said...Dennis Rodman aside), 'Maximum Risk', & 'Knock Off' (a film which exists seemingly for Tsui Hark to throw in every camera trick in the book within a 90 minute running time...interesting to know the original idea for this movie was a JCVD / Jet Li team up, shame it didn't happen, I honestly think it would have been better than 'Forbidden Kingdom'!).
One movie that hasn't been mentioned is the Ringo Lam directed 'Replicant'...yet another movie with Van Damme in a double role, as if 'Double Impact' & 'Maximum Risk' wern't enough, but the difference with this one is that one of the Van Damme's is the bad guy.
That alone makes it worth watching to see JCVD in a rare villain role, but what makes it even better is exactly how much of a villain he is! The bad Van Damme is evil in the most extreme ways in true vintage Hong Kong cinema style...not only does he burn single mothers alive, but when rampaging through a hospital literally no one is spared...whether you be in a wheelchair, on a drip, whatever, if you're in his path you're going to get kicked out the way, classic viewing!

Not really a true fan of Van Damme. I know some Asian stars that will just tear him to shredds like Chin Sui Ho (Chin Bo from Twin Warriors)

Ack....you mean Tai Chi Master! There should be a ban on using Weinstein'd titles of Asian movies on this forum! :crossedlips:
That's true...but remember he did beat Xiong Xin Xin in 'Double Team', and that was under the choreography of Sammo Hung!

Not really.... I think Chuck Norris is a crazy ass, biblethumping moron, and a pretty poor screenfighter, yet I still own all his Cannon flicks.
I think Steven Seagal is a bloated, pathologocal liar and a pretty bad actor, yet I still own his flicks from Nico to Under Siege 2!
Same with Van D.....!
These movies have a huge nostalgia factor, cheese factor, and represents a style of filmmaking that isn't around anymore! And I don't need to idolize, or even like the star of those movies to enjoy them. Guess im just weird like that!

Did Chuck Vito from the Hells Angels really kick his ass at a night club? I wouldn't think Van Damme would go out like that.

I'm saying nothing. :crossedlips:
Seriously, though, I'm not talking about the actors as they are in real life, but rather their films. Clearly you are a fan of Van Damme, Norris, and Seagal. Nobody owns 30 movies of people they don't like (on-screen). It's OK to admit it. No one will think less of you.
Maybe those guys are a-holes in reality... doesn't make their films any less fun to watch.
Unfortunately I've heard that Chuck has turned into a crazy gun-tottin' ultra-right-wing christian. A shame as I always thought he was one of the nice guys. Van Damme has it seems turned over a new leaf and left his earlier arrogance and excess behind him. Seagal I've given up on. He hasn't made a good movie in almost 15 years.

Well, I don't care for their off screen personalities, nor do I think they are very good actors. So I don't really consider myself a fan of theirs (although I would have no problem admitting it if I was).
But I do enjoy some of their movies, as it coincides with a particular style of filmmaking that I like. That being mindless and cheesy 80's- early 90's action.
same for Michael Dudikoff... a terrible actor, crap screenfighter, but I love American Ninja 1-2, Avenging Force and Platoon Leader. Those movies, like the movies of the other guys, have a special vibe that probably reminds me of my childhood. Maybe that's why I like them.

Watched Hard Target today, Van Damme with a mullet? Awesome movie though. I order a few more JCVD movies and look forward to watching them, thanks for the recommendations everyone.

Probably Bloodsport, mainly for nostalgia. But I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by JCVD.
Bloodsport, without a doubt. My brother and I idolize that movie, especially the soundtrack.I also remembered enjoying Sudden Death, but it's been a very long time since I saw it, so I don't know if my opinion would stand.
JCVD was very good, since it took him out of his element of action movies. Until Death was pretty good too, I was pleasantly surprised after seeing it.

I would have to say these are my favorites:
1) Bloodsport
2)Kick Boxer
3)Double Impact
4) Universal Soldier # 3: I thought was the best one.
Honestly I really haven't watched that many of his B-Movies.

I was a huge Van Damme fan growing up, but now, after seeing stars like Jet Li and Jackie Chan, I think he's a joke. He was good during thet ime when they only wanted whites to do martial arts. I notice in his new movies, he's more like Jackie Chan, but he's really a joke. The below are great movies though, but I don't really see myself wanting to enjoy the past.
Kickboxer
Lion Heart
Double Impact
Bloodsport

no retreat
Hard target
Replicant i liked aswell

I don't know about everybody else but I'd warn you to stay away from:
In Hell
Wake of Death
Legionnaire
Desert Heat
His first 5 or 6 films, to me, are his best. And with the exception of "Bloodsport", I don't think any of them are on a par with his display in "No Retreat/No Surrender". He absolutely stole that movie away and got the break he deserved.
In the 'man hunts man' sub-genre of action films, "Hard Target" rules. But "Surviving the Game" is awesome as well (there's no JCVD in it).

Top 5 Van Dammage for me:
Hard Target (wish someone would clean up that so-called Directors Cut and put it out)
Bloodsport
Double Impact
Death Warrant

- Bloodsport. Good movie.
- Hard Target. Woo's best american movie. Van Damme's best american movie. Shame about the mullet.
- Wake of Death. Very good.
- J.C.V.D. Very entertaining movie, and Jean-Claude is really convincing in his role as Jean-Claude. Great acting. Cool story as well.

I haven't watched a Van Damme film for so long, that I can hardly remember what the films are like!
Kickboxer was my last watch a few years ago. Really enjoyed it.
Gonna have to crack out Bloodsport and Hard Target.
Would also love to find a proper uncut version of Double Impact that included the extra 'fruity scene' as well as the end fight with Bolo that my mate says is missing bits. There's a German print floating about that claims it's uncut, but it aint!

I do not like torture scene where they use drill at villain in wake of death but outside that it`s good movie.

Blood Sword,
You know, honestly, I only gave one viewing to each of the 1st 4 I listed so I don't remember them too well. And I listed those because there was no MA in them. I want JCVD's acting to be good (good enough, anyway) but I don't care about seeing him in dramatic roles. I buy his stuff for butt-kicking. (And they had none or not enough to qualify for me, anyhow.) Maybe I shouldn't be so harsh on them but I just didn't get what I wanted or expected out of them. I have the same problem with some of Speakman's and Seagal's movies. Fortunately his latest stuff seems to be moving back towards his forte to some degree.

I agree you on there with legionnaire and in hell.Desert Heat I have not seen but in general I think people here sometimes bit harsh(that is opinion of course not ultimate truth) for Seagal and Van Damme.Sure their movies are not top class but sometimes when want break from asian cinema their movies do the thing.I am not supreme fan of movies Jackie made after project A and enjoy some van dammes and seagals more than police story 2 or 1st strike(+all chans hollywood projects).
