IMO it seems that there are some scene that are so visually spectral they play better without sound which is not really a surprise see as they where shot without sound two I can think of are DREADNAUGHT when Yuen Biao on the run from Sunny Yuen:
(try for yourself will need to turn the sound off & on to compare & see what I mean?) & EXCITING DRAGON aka DRUNKEN DRAGON Phillip Ko & henchmen vs Chin Lung as a Boat Style Master: But what other scene do you think play better without sound? |

This entire movie is much better without sound (or at least without dialogue):

i disagree in general and on the first account (dreadnaught) with your thesis, jrcma.
as for drunken dragon, im rather sure, that wu tang beat aint on the version i got layin around. sounds ridiculous indeed. i could imagine this be alright if it were a teaser skit for the flick but to get rid of the original sound track in favor of this is just plain idiotic. for dramaturgic purposes, sound in a movie is essential. i bet, if the fans were like okay screw the great nostalgic vibe of the original dub, lets give someone competent and devoted a chance to remix and rescore entire old skoolies, we`ll approach it with an open mind, then we`d be in for a positive surprise (quite possibly, not necessarily )the "classier" bunch of kf flicks like dreadnaught, buddhist fist, rendezvous with death (u name em) have quite a bit to offer in terms of framing, tempo, timing etc editing & cinematography per se, i dont see any inferiority compared to many contemporary productions. pair that with a sound concept like someone actually gives a damn and has the required skill set & they could up the impact. |

I think the scenes with the ninjas taking over the school in Five Element Ninjas works great silent. When I first bought the dvd (from ns video I think) it was retitled Chinese Super Ninjas. The ninja scenes were silent and I thought it was to great effect.
