I'm around a third of the way through Scott's book and I can heartily recommend this to pretty much everyone on here - unless, for some reason, you might not like lots of action, martial arts, interesting characters, a deep story and a fully realised world.
So, if you're looking for a darn good read this Xmas, or you know someone who does, then BUY THIS BOOK!! |

Last Saturday (Feb. 2nd) was the Local Author Expo at the downtown Birmingham Public Library in B'ham, Alabama. (Have a couple of photos but can't seem to get them to upload here.)
As a 1st time author, I thought I'd give it a try. Glad I did. It was a really good, encouraging experience and a boost of confidence. I was a bit (ok, ok, alot) apprehensive going in, especially considering the facts that (A) I am not a mover and a shaker, and (B) my display was rather simplistic compared to some of the others. (I had books, a blow-up of the cover, a binder with the Amazon reviews received so far, and free bookmarks {a big hit} with info to the links.) But here's what I found to be interesting regarding that.... First: I must give honor where it is due and that is to the fantastically talented fella who did the cover art for me: Kung Fu Bob! I can honestly say that the smartest thing I did (other than actually writing the book) was getting him to do the artwork. I had the cover enlarged to an 11" x 17" frame (wish I'd gone bigger). It caught everyone's attention. No one passing by did not, at the least, slow down to take a better look. Many came back to look again, some more than once. I saw no other cover art there that was anywhere near as intriguing as his. Without a doubt, I'm sure it was the contributing factor to people actually stopping to check out the book which led to.... Second: those who checked out the book were surprised at its size. Honestly, at over 650 pages, it was the thickest book I saw at the event. Due to that, interested persons would inquire as to how long it took to write and edit it, which led them to want to know exactly.... Third: what was the book about. And what astounded me was that they were genuinely interested when I told them. It fascinated them. I sold 5 copies and was sort of dumbstruck each time I did so. (One of the sales was to a 12 yr old young man who turned out to be the son of an independent publisher a few tables down from me. ) 2 people said they were getting an ebook and another said she would order it when she got back home...to Texas. (Of the authors situated all about me, I didn't notice any of them make any sales throughout the day.)I met lots of super-nice people and maybe made some contacts. Looking forward to next year already. |

Hey brother, way to go- making your dreams a reality and doing what many of us would like to do, but have never tried to do. I'm so glad you had a good time and I appreciate your comments regarding the cover art.
Just to let you know, believe it or not, you actually did pretty well with sales. When I was the art director for the cool little publishing company Strider Nolan we went to a huge book expo in New York City. There were thousands of people there, we had four or five titles published at the time (we brought several extremely heavy cases of each book ), and we only sold under a dozen books. I don't think the tables to either side, nor the ones across from us made any sales, or maybe 1 or 2 books at the most. It's more of a window shopping experience for people and mostly to "get your name out there". So thumb's up man!

This thread missed my attention, it's been a while since I read a book and the brain needs a jog(you know, use it or lose it) so I'll pick this up from a fellow Kung Fu enthusiast, may take a bit to read it.
Great artwork KFB, love the layout! ShaOW!linDude you should get a banner printed out from a sign shop for your next expo.

I truly appreciate the support and hope you won't be disappointed. Look forward to hearing your thoughts about it. Feel free to pm me if you want.Yeah, definitely getting a banner done next time. That was one of the 1st things I noticed that a few folks had. Also, I may go for a larger size display print, too. Thought about getting bags for purchases but a couple of people who stopped by said they'd seen someone carrying the book around after a purchase, so scratch that idea. That's free advertising!
