Overview: This is widely regarded as China’s first wuxia (heroic swordplay) film for its pioneering incorporation of common wuxia conventions derived from popular wuxia literature. It is the second film released by Unique Film Productions (Tianyi), a Shanghai studio founded by the eldest of the Shaw brothers, Runje Shaw. Based on a script by Runje Shaw, the film concerns efforts by swordswoman Li Feifei to aid a young girl whose recent marriage is in trouble after she is wrongly accused of infidelity. Starring in the title role is Fen Juhua, a female Chinese opera performer who excelled in acrobatic roles and went on to train future martial arts film talents including Connie Chan, Josephine Siao, Lam Ching-ying, and Stephen Tung Wai. The film established a number of enduring cinematic wuxia conventions including the fighting female lead, period settings and costumes, chivalrous heroism, and screen fight choreography rooted in Chinese opera acrobatics and stage fighting.
