I just watched this movie on youtube (not the best quality but the whole movie is there) and was caught off-guard by how great it was. “Ip Man” moves into my top 10 favorite kung fu movies. My only knit-pick would be the rather unlikely title “Ip Man” for a kung fu movie. In a genre full of odd titles this one is particularly puzzling (unless, maybe, you better informed in martial arts history).

Ip Man is an absolute must watch. I have been waiting for a really good Kung-fu movie and this is absolutely amazing. Donnie Yen did an amazing job as Yip Man. I honestly believe this movie should be rated as a 10/10. The fight scences were amazingly done and Yip Man was shown as a true respectable kung-fu master; only fighting serious when need be. This movie has a much more deeper meaning than fighting, it is about applying the true principles of Kung-fu. While Martial Arts may seem dead to some in a world without too much violence. Yip Man is living proof of why the Martial Arts have their place in a time of peace or war.

To shmzr: Yes, they did use some wires. I’ve seen a video when they were filming, and saw wires used. So that should answer your question.

Ip Man was a great movie and I cannot wait until the sequel. The thing I really like is that Donnie Yen portrayed Yip Man so well. I hope to see this in Donnie Yen’s next films. In my opinion, Donnie Yen is now one of the top actors in HK.

Great action… but why did they have to use any wires? I makes some of the otherwise engaging fight scenes seem cartoonish.

I have to agree, best martial arts movie since Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon. It rivals Jet Li’s and Jackie Chan’s movies, and with very little to no major acrobatics. As a Wing Chun student myself, i would of been able to see if this was simply a futile attempt at making a buck or two at the theater, but instead i was very pleased with the outcome and realism of the fighting applications. I wish i could understand Mandarin or Cantonese, but i still managed to get read some script and enjoy it. It is now part of my collection. Can’t wait to see the sequals!! I hope they will stay true to the formula of the first presentation. The Shaw brothers are surely jealous of this one :D LOL!

Great review,amazing movie! Just when Donnie Yen is starting to re-invent martial arts choreography,with his ground-breaking mma style in SPL,and Flashpoint,he comes along with his performance in Ip Man,which single-handedly made me want to rekindle my romance with traditional chinese arts. Sammo Hung gets equal credit for choreographing such great wing chun sequences. I hope whoever does the casting for Bruce Lee in the sequel(s),casts someone with actual wing chun/martial arts experience,rather than just a resemblance in appearance. Since he will be a young Bruce,I would assume that accomplishing this task will be much less difficult than if he were in his prime….Excellent article,just like always,Mark. Keep up the good work!
