‘Ip Man’ and Tak Sakaguchi coming to NYAFF

Tak Sakaguchi

The folks at Subway Cinema are thumbing their noses at the economy by remaining determined to make this year’s New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) one of their best. The fest is scheduled for June 19 through July 5 and they already have an impressive line-up. As usual, I’ll focus on their martial arts and action-related offering. You can find a complete preview at the Subway Cinema News blog.

Japanese action star and director Tak Sakaguchi (VERSUS, AZUMI) will be in attendance to present his films YOROI SAMURAI ZOMBIE and BE A MAN! SAMURAI SCHOOL. Joining him will be stuntman and action choreographer Isao Karasawa (FLASHPOINT). The two plan to perform live stunts onstage before the screenings.

IP MAN

Ryoo Seung-wan (THE CITY OF VIOLENCE) will be there to present his latest film, the spy spoof DACHIMAWA LEE, as well as a rare action comedy from Korea called MISS, PLEASE BE PATIENT (1981).

Wing Chun biopic IP MAN, starring Donnie Yen and featuring the action choreography of Sammo Hung, will be making its theatrical debut in the U.S. Other screenings sans guest appearances include Tony Ching’s swordplay epic AN EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS, a retrospective screening of Chang Cheh’s kung fu classic THE FIVE VENOMS, period superhero actioner K-20: LEGEND OF THE MASK starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, and trashy gore actioner SAMURAI PRINCESS.

  • Fortunate enough to have caught "Ip Man" -- I give it 5 stars and urge anyone in the NY area to try to catch it at NYAFF. Best sentimental/nationalistic old-style kung fu flick I've seen in ages.

When will Ip Man get a US distribution dvd release?????? This has gotten so much positive buzz and nothing yet. I hope this will showcase it and someone like Magnolia can get the rights for US dvd distribution. It's a shame Donnie Yuen is at the point where Jet Li was many years ago. He was the 'big star no one knew of mainstream but the inner circle of fans who watch his hong kong films do.' He is very talented and prob did the right thing and went to Hong Kong and not let Hollywood get to him.

They need theatres with better seating from what a old friend in NYC told me.She said the seats were so small like they were made for a tiny child.
She then got her money back.

It's good. Especially the ending, as usual. Get to it!
  • Sounds like the place to be! I can't for the life of me rent "The Five Venoms." "Ip Man" is not available domestically. I watched "Azumi" the other night and I want more!. Finally, I have been renting everything possible that even hints that Sammo Hung visited the buffet table on the set. "Fatty" is the best!

BTW, "Skinny Tiger and Fatty Dragon" is laying on the end table just begging me to watch it!
