Hollywood actor and Asian film fanatic Samuel L. Jackson (PULP FICTION, SNAKES ON A PLANE) announced that he will be starring in a remake to the 1985 hip hop-martial arts action film THE LAST DRAGON. The original film starred Taimak Guariello as a young kung fu expert who searches for the final level of martial arts, the “glow,” while having to save a local DJ from a crazed producer as well as the “Shogun of Harlem”, Sho’Nuff.
Jackson will be playing none other than the Shogun of Harlem, Sho’Nuff, originally played by Julius J. Carry III, who passed away a few months ago of pancreatic cancer. Upon signing to play Sho’Nuff, Jackson said, “I’m a huge fan of the original and look forward to bringing Sho’Nuff into the 21st century.”
Dallas Jackson, head of the urban family label DJ Classics, will be producing and is currently working on the screenplay. John Davis and Kerry Gordy, the son of Motown founder and the original film’s executive producer Berry Gordy, will also produce alongside Wutang Clan rapper and film musician The RZA.
Columbia Pictures hopes to release THE LAST DRAGON next year, to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of Motown Entertainment, who co-produced the original and will co-produce the remake as well.
