Hollywood actor and Asian film fanatic Samuel L. Jackson (PULP FICTION, SNAKES ON A PLANE) announced that he will be starring in a remake to the 1985 hip hop-martial arts action film THE LAST DRAGON. The original film starred Taimak Guariello as a young kung fu expert who searches for the final level of martial arts, the “glow,” while having to save a local DJ from a crazed producer as well as the “Shogun of Harlem”, Sho’Nuff.

Jackson will be playing none other than the Shogun of Harlem, Sho’Nuff, originally played by Julius J. Carry III, who passed away a few months ago of pancreatic cancer. Upon signing to play Sho’Nuff, Jackson said, “I’m a huge fan of the original and look forward to bringing Sho’Nuff into the 21st century.”

Dallas Jackson, head of the urban family label DJ Classics, will be producing and is currently working on the screenplay. John Davis and Kerry Gordy, the son of Motown founder and the original film’s executive producer Berry Gordy, will also produce alongside Wutang Clan rapper and film musician The RZA.

Columbia Pictures hopes to release THE LAST DRAGON next year, to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of Motown Entertainment, who co-produced the original and will co-produce the remake as well.

remakes are like rehashing the same ideas that dulled out long ago. i guess some people are forgetting about originality.

This was a great movie but I don't know how I'd feel about a remake. They would be making a great choice in casting Sam Jackson but there is one character that would be very hard to re-create. THE 80's!!! That was the character that really made this movie what it was. The fashion of that time made it possible for Sho'nuff to walk around town in football pads, that "shogun" hair-do, and a cape. The music of the era made way for Eddie Arcadian to be a deluded, excentric, nobody with dreams of ruling the world. If that movie had been made any other time, it wouldn't have made it as far as it did. In any case this is all still just a rumor. I'll believe there is a remake in progress when I see it on imdb.com.
  • about RZA.... i like him. i like his mindset and insight for kung-fu (movies) in general. but the thing is... he follows quentin tarantino... and i dont think quentin makes spectacular movies... i dont hate quentin, i just dont like the way he goes around things... i mean... look at the dubbed version of tom yum goong... he took out scenes from it too...

First off, R.I.P. Julius. I just saw the movie a few weeks ago and Sho 'Noff WAS the movie. Hehe has parts were the most memorable.

And seeing Samuel L. Jackson and The RZA working on another INCREDIBLE project just gets me so excited. I can't wait for Afro Samurai season 2 to come on tv in a few months. I don't have more respeect for anyone in the music industry more than I do The RZA. Me and his tastes in movies are a lot alike. I wish to be as hardcore of a kungfu movie fan as he is one day. And Samuel L. Jackson is one of my absolute favorite actors. He will definitely add some great attitude to the movie. I'M SHO'NOFF MOTHERF-

    lol

More to the point, who's gonna play Vanity's role? This is the new Millenium so I hope the girl gets to kick some ass too. Shu Qi comes to mind...Chinese wushu DJ girl. If RZA's involved at least it'll be respectfull of the genre.

If the remake is successful there ought to be a sequel with Qiu Yuen(the landlady in Kung Fu Hustle) as Leroy Green's biological mother and Sonny Chiba as his step-father!!

  • What sucks is they havent even contacted Taimak to be a part of the movie.

Taimak looks just like he did when the original Last Dragon came out and is in the best shape of his life.

Hopefully they contact him, we know how bad he wants to have something to do with this movie and he should. He made The Last Dragon what it is today.

    RIP JULIUS.

CALL TAIMAK YA DUMB HEADS AT COLUMBIA

tai maks still about he could have a mentor role in it.. had contact with him alot a few years ago when he was cheorographing Maddona on her tour
  • the original movie was classic. and i love samuel l. jackson as sho'nuff, but only verbally, not physically. i dont know if he could do all the kung fu, or karate, (i could never tell which sho'nuff was using, cause shogun is japanese, but it looked like tiger style in the end) to make it a better action film than the first

well this news put a smile on my face lol. i think they shouldn't do a re-make of it, but the movie, ...lol to me, its all goofy. so they can do what they want.

u know who should play sho'nuff? busta rhymes... haha. i think he should play sho'nuff, since he did in one of his old music video. i'm kinda surprise busta wasn't asked lol.

If i understand it correctly, the man who played ShoNuff has passed away. First of all my respect to the man, second, rest in peace master, you did a excellent job in the movie. I'm looking forward for the movie.

Sounds like something to look forward to, if anyone can bring the character of Sho'nuff back to life it'd be Samuel Jackson. Any word on who will play "Bruce" Leroy Green? I hope Taimak is given at least a memorable cameo in this remake, he should've had the chance to star in a sequel back in the eighties.
