KUNG FU CYBORG, Jeff Lau’s wacky-looking sci-fi comedy starring Jacky Wu Jing as a kung fu-fighting cyborg has been picked up for North American distribution by Strategic Film Partners, an LA-based international sales and distribution company.
The company plans to explore new media platforms including internet, mobile and video-on-demand, apart from traditional theatrical and DVD avenues.
I’m a big supporter of on-demand, online video distribution and I hope they are successful in their efforts. This could pave the way for less risky distribution models for Asian film imports that compete directly with pirated torrents and streaming video that have been on the rise in recent years.
That said, I’m not interested in watching Asian action movies on my cell phone unless they sell models with a minimum of a 22-inch LCD screen. Try to fit that in your pocket, Steve Jobs.
KUNG FU CYBORG is premiering in Chinese-language territories beginning August 13th.
