David Belle in DISTRICT B13

Robert Mark Kamen, the screenwriter behind box office hits THE KARATE KID, THE FIFTH ELEMENT and THE TRANSPORTER is working on an American remake of French parkour actioner DISTRICT B13 for producer Luc Besson.

The news came as little more than a footnote to a Los Angeles Times article on Kamen’s successful partnership with Besson which most recently spawned the hit thriller TAKEN, starring Liam Neeson. The article also mentions that a sequel to TAKEN is in the works.

The original DISTRICT B13 had a limited theatrical run in the U.S. in 2006 courtesy of Magnolia Pictures. It was subsequently put out on DVD. A sequel with original leads, David Belle and Cyril Raffaelli, was released last month in France.

Regarding the DISTRICT B13 remake, Twitch Film contributor Al Young made a good point when he asked, “Where the hell are they going to find an actor in Hollywood who is willing to jump across one building to the next and perform other crazy parkour feats?”

Not only will a parkour artist be needed to fill the shoes of parkour co-founder David Belle, someone will also have to fill in for highly skilled stunt actor and martial artist Cyril Raffaelli. I’m sure they could find some good candidates if they looked hard enough but Hollywood craves name recognition to sell tickets and that usually means green screens and wirework.

I’m not against the idea of a remake actually. DISTRICT B13 was a fun actioner yet it left plenty of room for refinement. Kamen is a competent writer who knows how to craft a good story to showcase action. I think he could definitely come up with a better story for the American version. Here’s hoping that the producers are smart and use some fresh actors with real physical skills for the leads and reserve any celebrities for the mostly non-fighting villain roles.

One gentleman I wouldn’t mind seeing in Belle’s role is British free runner Chase Armitage.

For Raffaelli, perhaps a trip to Loopkicks Camp in San Jose, California could produce a worthy candidate. Loopkicks is an annual gathering of tricking artists, tricking being a flashy, performance-oriented form of martial arts similar to what Raffaelli showcases in DISTRICT B13.

why not frelling dub District 13 in ENGLISH and promote that?

you know hollywood couldn't match the original with 10 or 20 times the budget so why try?

I'm with the guy who said why not make a NEW film and use real talent.

Hollywood is less concerned with authenticity and more concerned with the editing process responsible for selling the final product. Blue screen, and other trickery will be utilized to represent the film; I suspect the same will occur when Prince of Persia starts filming.

Who cares if people from loopkicks are in the movie? if they can do a good job then thats good enough.lots of unknown talent about, thats how people get discovered.....................................................................................................................................................
    i.e.adkins
    mullins
    tony jaa
    etc etc etc etc.....................

If people don't get a chance, they can't show you what they can do....

I agree with Kemp, all this BS-ing has to stop. Why with the remakes? The money spent on a remake could be used to fund an entirely... different movie. Ah, but "different" is scary. So take something that was already good in the first place but had no exposure, rework it for the Mcdonaldland masses to choke down with their 60oz-free-refill-Cokes in the extra wide movie seats, and while this is going on I'll be writhing in agony in the corner. F remakes.

What about Matt Mullins or Scott Adkins. Both those guys are ready for a big break like that and would be a great pair

Forgive me, but I want an American remake to fail. Badly. This remaking of overseas action films for American audiances because Americans are racist and xenofobic has got to stop.

The Loopkicks Camp was a sugestion by Mr. Pollard only, we're no even sure if this movie is going to happen, and those guys from Loopkicks may not be profesional actor or stuntmen but they do have great phisical skill and that is exactly what this movie is going to need if they do make it.

I cannot believe they are going to put some lame Trickster from Loopkicks in the same hole that the best stuntman in Europe had.

Most tricksters don't even have 5 years worth of experience. Cyril Raffaelli have a good set of 17 to 20 years of pure experience and stunting. If they are going to put someone on his hole, at least they need to put someone good.

That remake is going to be an epic fail.

You convinced me on Chase Armitage. That guy had a great demo reel.

Manny77 suggestion of Scott Adkins for Cyril Raffaelli is good too.

The David Belle role has to be a free runner in my opinion so Ray Park wouldn't work there. Park would also be a decent Raffaelli replacement.

All honesty, B13 was a fun film, while I think this remake is unnecessary, the script can be improved upon.

    What a suprise..NOT :-)

If they ever do a remake for the US, there's only 2 names that can pull those stunts:
For David Belle role they should use Ray Park
For Cyril Raffaelli role they should use Scott Adkins
Both with superb martial arts background and they both done numerous stunt doubles for many A-list actors.
