If you haven’t had enough fantasy fighting in DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION, STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI or BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE then you are in luck. A behind-the-scenes preview of director Gordon Chan’s upcoming fighting video game-to-movie adaptation KING OF FIGHTERS is here to tease you with more. The video reveals some of the heavily CGI and wire-enhanced action, onscreen fighters and actors who portray them including Ray Park and Maggie Q. In a second video, Park is briefly interviewed and talks about his character “Rugal Bernstein.”
This movie doesn’t look any more promising than any of the previous films I mentioned and perhaps less so. I’m having flashbacks of Ray Park in BALLISTIC: ECKS VS. SEVER again and it’s not pretty. KING OF FIGHTERS is a relatively obscure video game compared with STREET FIGHTER and TEKKEN and I’m not seeing anything to suggest it will break out into the mainstream. However, I love seeing a veteran stuntman like David Leitch get a prominent acting role in an action film. We need more actors who don’t need six months of training to perform their own moves.
The producers also honor an unwritten but well known rule that states live-action films based on action anime or fighting games must feature gorgeous women in prominent roles.
All I have to say is, Yo Maggie Q, I’m happy for you. I’m going let you finish but Bernice Liu has some of the best lift and bounce of all time… of all time. Did I mention Françoise Yip from BLACK MASK is in this too?
