David Carradine It’s highly unusual and sad that I find myself having to write two obituaries in one day but such is the case today. KUNG FU series star David Carradine has reportedly been found dead in a Bangkok hotel room after he failed to appear for a meal with a film crew while shooting the movie STRETCH. Originally, no details were provided but it now appears that the actor apparently committed suicide by hanging.

‘This news follows previous announcement regarding the death of 96-year-old Hong Kong martial arts movie legend Shek Kin (ENTER THE DRAGON).

The son of legendary character actor John Carradine (STAGECOACH), David Carradine was a TV actor whose fame was catapulted to superstardom after he landed the role of “Kwai Chang Caine” in the immensely popular KUNG FU TV series, which ran from 1972 through 1975.

Carradine left the series to pursue a film career that encompassed over 100 films. Genre highlights include DEATHRACE 2000 (1975) which was recently remade, CIRCLE OF IRON (1978), LONE WOLF MCQUADE (1983) where he fought Chuck Norris, and Quentin Tarantino’s KILL BILL films. Carradine also starred in a sequel to the original KUNG FU TV series. KUNG FU: THE LEGEND CONTINUES premiered as a TV movie in 1992 and was followed by a series that ran from 1993 through 1997.

Carradine recently appeared in CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE and will be seen, posthumously, in action director Yuen Woo-ping’s upcoming period kung fu film TRUE LEGEND.

David Carradine wasn’t the greatest screen fighter, nor did he typically star in the best films. Yet his contribution to the martial arts genre is undeniable. By portraying a poised, half-Chinese Shaolin monk who applied Buddhist principles and Shaolin kung fu to overcoming adversity in the Old West, he helped to introduce the culture and higher ideals of Chinese martial arts to America. “Kwai Chang Caine” in KUNG FU became an icon that remains popular to this day thanks to Carradine.

Goodnight, “Grasshopper.”

Update: There is continuing speculation about how David Carradine really died and how his body was found. Because we’re more concerned about his professional life on Kung Fu Cinema, we’re not going to report further on this topic until all the facts are sorted out. Readers are welcome to post their own updates below or in our related forum thread.

bruised lo, rampant homophobia gets you a place in hell
  • BruisedLo
of course he's dead. you need to remind everyone?....

alright enough with the praising, kissing up, and all that grasshopper bullshit. i have a newspaper here, and on the article its about david carradine, what do you know. it says here...

Thai police initially said they suspected Carradine's death was a suicide, but they later conceded it could have been accidental. Their description - that the actor's body was found nude, with ropes around his neck, wrist and genitals - fueled speculation that he was killed while engaging in a dangerous sex practice called autoerotic asphyxiation. =.=

so carradine fans, try to remember him for all the good that he's done, even though his death was g@y. you wanna honor someone who died like that? you people are on crack, and i don't give a F what you say.

here's a man who got the lead for the kung fu series, which was suppose to be for BRUCE! then they did a kung fu: the movie back in 1986, and Brandon Lee played Caine's son. hmm if Bruce got the part, and they did the movie, both real father and son would be in the fictional movie.

    he's fucking dead
  • as i already wrote somewhere else, Carradine may probably be only second to Bruce Lee in terms of popularizing the Chinese martial arts in the west! RIP!
  • I'm leaning toward the "Assassination by a secret Kung Fu Sect" theory as the most plausible explanation for Carradine's death
  • P.T
they say it probably happened through a lovegame, because they found the rope both in his neck and his "lower organs"...well noone will ever know, what really happened, and all we have to say is our condolences...

  • Hard to deny that David Carradine was an innovator. I don't think the Kung Fu series would have ever achieved such incredible accolades if it weren't for him. David brought something really special to that role, and so many others. David had many personal demons, and perhaps was a tad jaded. But he had many amazing talents, and was a great actor who brought real depth and dimension to the roles he portrayed. The Kung Fu genre would not be the same today if it weren't for the Kung Fu series and that series would have died after the first season if it weren't for him. He will truly be missed.

my parents was in shock when we heard the news, i too was in shock. me and my parents loved his Kung Fu series.
  • DarkWarrior
Now the AP reports Thai Police says his death is accidental
  • DragonSword
If I were to make a movie, I would definitely put David in it. His screen presence and charisma are unlike any of the actors of today. He will be missed, and remembered. Now you are immortal grasshopper...
  • Joe Hariis
what're you talking about bob hedrest? Spouting such crap, nobody would miss you. RIP David.
  • Bob Herdrest
I think he was deprest. He fight himsef to much in the head den he caratee chop himsef in the head too. He hang himsef up so the world can see he so dam sad. It not the 70ies any mo so he sad an he mad to! He make garate film and fight with bamboo that dont crack,..woow I never seen that befor!
You know what? This worlds going to shit right before your eyes....especially the USA! Do you see a bright shiny future right now?
He's was old, maybe he had cancer, who knows. Maybe he was fed up with the bullshit of Hollywood types and tired of being typecast. Wouldn't you? Do you think he had more in him as an actor than just a Kung Fu guy? I'm sure he did.
Problem with the world is that everyone labels things, makes their "piss marks" on what they think they know "all about".
I watched Kung Fu as a child and I loved it. The only TV show in it's time that had SPIRIT and philosophy. Sad, it could have done more of that, gone deeper, and branched off to some sort of intelligence on TV. No such thing anymore.
The problem with seeing BALANCE in life or any type of harmony is that when you are in a down time you can see the contrast of it...the disharmony, fakeness, disfunctional cheepness of all the flakey selfish people in this world.
I bet he just gave up on all the B.S...Not a good way to do it though.
I love him for what he did and tried to convey on television.

death is inevitable. That is the reality. Too bad he sped up the process. oh well life is a bitch then you marry one. good bye David!!
  • derwhood
I was having the same thoughts John (striking similarity to Michael Hutchence, INXS' death), hopefully not
In any case, R.I.P. Grasshopper, thanks for having given us so much enjoyment in life
  • Michael Jones
I have also heard on CNN that it may NOT have been suicide. I hope the crime professionals of Thailand have the expertise to uncover what really happened to this great contributor to America's martial arts entertainment community. I am sorry for his family's loss.
  • Truly sad and shocking news, for the news surrounding his death is even more shocking. :( :(
  • DarkWarrior
Wasen,t he was suppose to be apart of "Walk The Earth"the Kung Fu re-imagined film.I read this some where he was doing a small cameo.Last thing I saw David in was a DTV film with Chaing Pei-pei.

Anyway they are saying on the news here that no one believes he did it to himself.Using a cord is a painful way to kill yourself.I guess that is what makes the story un-believeable.
  • BruisedLo
    rest in pieces.
  • Timur
i very much loved him because he was man of 70s and also by reason he had charisma...i will not talk that he have not had right to kill himself or something like that, but this way has been terrible for such person like him.
  • John
From what I read it may be something even worst and very embarassing that he did to himself. I just hope they leave him with the dignity he deserves in his passing. A classy, cool, talented man who regardless of career ups and downs had an film and tv career that will always be remembered. All the best to his family, I can't imagine how they must feel. Rest in Peace David, and thank you for entertaining us for so many wonderful years.
  • I'm at a loss for words.
