With the recent success of Thailand’s CHOCOLATE and news revolving around Hong Kong’s upcoming film COWEB, Japan has made a welcome return to the female-lead martial arts film with their upcoming release HIGH KICK GIRL.
Seventeen-year old karate champion Rina Takeda is playing the titular character, a young high schooler who trains in karate and has to face a special group of martial arts fighters wih the help of her sensei (master). From the poster, it looks as if Takeda will be wearing her school uniform for the film’s fight sequences.
The film is directed by karate champion turned actor/producer Fuyuhiko Nishi, whose previous work includes the acclaimed karate drama KURA-OBI as well as appearing in the Hollywood B-movie HONOR, alongside Russell Wong, Jason Barry, Roddy Piper, Rorion and Rener Gracie, and Remy Bojansky to name a few. Nishi was also a producer of SHAOLIN GIRL, a Japanese-made spin-off to Stephen Chow’s 2001 smash hit SHAOLIN SOCCER. Nishi is also in charge of the film’s action sequences.
HIGH KICK GIRL is scheduled to come out in Japan in the summer of 2009.
