Malaysian poster art for NINJA (2009).

The makers of NINJA, action director Isaac Florentine’s upcoming ninja actioner starring Scott Adkins, have just unleashed five behind-the-scenes videos that offer a sweet preview of the film. Each clip reveals previously unseen footage mixed with interviews with cast members and the director.

Of special interest to me is Adkins’ stellar physical performance, the willingness of the stunt actors to make contact in complex group fighting scenes and details about Florentine’s decision to keep the martial arts authentic while keeping the film dynamic and fun.

In one of the clips, Florentine suggests that were ninjas operating today, they would be using high-tech equipment. I’m inclined to believe that were Sonny Chiba and Chang Cheh making martial arts movies today, they would display high-impact action like we’re seeing in NINJA.

What I’m not digging is what appears to be CGI projectiles and blood, similar to what we’re also seeing in footage from James McTeigue’s NINJA ASSASSIN. These digital tricks cannot replace good, old fashioned squibs and real, weighted weapons judiciously edited into a sequence when thrown.

This is only the latest in an aggressive push by the filmmakers to promote NINJA directly to the online fan community ahead of its release, first in Malaysian theaters on October 22 and then on DVD and Blu-ray in the U.K. on November 23. There is still no official word on a U.S. release date.

I believe Issac is improving as a director, his action films are getting better and better. So Ninja, then Undisputed 3? 2010 should be a good film for him, wonder whats next? Hope he gets a theatrical film soon, curious as to what he would do with a big budget...

I meant a good YEAR for him in 2010...
  • Wow! This looks great. I really can't wait to see this now. Wonderful! I was a little worried when I saw the trailer they released earlier. This is more like it!

Looks like they genuinely made a good-faith effort to do it right. I hope it pays off for them.

This looks awesome. I agree about the CGI. IT doesn't look to bad. It's just taking it to the next level. Blood would be better like in kill bill, however that had problems with the censors and was put in black and white.

you should check out the Directors Cut of Kill Bill then. that whole scene is in color and totally unedited. its pretty awesome. there were a few kills that got cut out that are in the directors cut.

that was pretty sweet. i personally dont have an issue with the CG used in this and Ninja Assassin. both of them seem to be going for a stylised look and some things are just too dangerous. i dont know if its a good idea to go chucking live shurikens at peoples heads. plus both movies will have practical effects for the violence too so its not all CG. at least Ninja Assassin will im not sure about Ninja.
