ONG BAK 2 (2008)

Magnet has released a new trailer for Tony Jaa’s ONG BAK 2: THE BEGINNING. It’s the latest move in marketing the period martial arts actioner ahead of an unusual advance digital release on VOD, Xbox Live and Amazon. Users of these services will have a chance to see the film on their TVs or PCs beginning September 25, ahead of the theatrical release on October 23.

Here is the official synopsis for ONG BAK 2:

Set in the regal times of King Naresuan, Tien (Tony Jaa) is a man who was born into nobility but had it stripped from him after his parents were brutally murdered. During his childhood Tien learned Khon, a form of dance which is usually reserved for royalty. Although he didn’t know it yet, Khon would later prove to be an invaluable aide to him. After seeing his parents murdered at the tender age of 10, Tien is forced to live on the streets where he is eventually captured by a group of thieves who take him in and teach him how to steal and fight.

Tien’s expertise as a thief and fighter grows and it isn’t long before he is made head thief. Then Tien sees something that makes his stomach churn. A competition is being held to find the best knights to serve under the very man who had killed Tien’s parents all those years ago. Tien passes the tests easily and is made Lord Rachasana’s 2nd Knight. Now, he has his opportunity to strike but he will have to use all his skill and ingenuity if he is going to get his revenge on the man who killed his parents.

  • Ong Bak 2 is a mess of a movie. It was a huge success in Thailand but that's really based off the popularity of the first Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong. (Which are two of my favorite martial arts movies of all time) Everyone, including myself, couldn't wait to see what Tony Jaa did next. I was very disappointed and if you have seen the long trailer for it that came out a year ago, you have seen the best parts of the movie. Pretty much all those fights come in the last 20 minutes of the film. And while they are decent fight scenes, they don't come close to the inventiveness of the fight scenes from his first two movies. Up until then those fight scenes, this is a dull and boring movie. I think much of that can be attributed to Tony Jaa's first attempt at directing. I know someone else eventually took over but a lot of what he directed was still left in. I think he should stick to what he does best and that's not directing.

I think this trailer sucked compared to the trailer I saw here a year ago, I think. To many switching scenes every second. Tho, that is not to say the movie sucked in the martial arts arena. I enjoy watching the fight scenes in the movie. I did hate the ending tho, because it wasn't the conclusion. If you know what I mean.

But to be truthful, I only watch his movies for the fight scenes.

It is sad that we have to wait even longer to view this title and we will be lucky to have a copy available for purchase in the US before next year!

Very nice....I want to see that!

Having seen a bootleg version of this movie I know it is incomplete. I was so dissatisfied with the ending I think it is a mistake to put this out seeing how long it took. I mean, when can we expect the second part of the movie to debut? Story wise this movie was a train wreck. Before I put my money down on a legit copy I want to see the completed project. Just my opinion.
  • Whydoesitmatter?
Doesnt tony jaa have to do like 10 more films for that thailand company before he can do an american film?
  • When Hollywood gets their hands on Asian marital arts stars, the results are usually underwhelming. Please give me some examples of Hollywood films where this wasn't the case.
  • Why would you want Tony Jaa to do an American film?
  • MartialArtist
Well, Tony doesn't even know how to speak fluent english so...
