They're selling dvds with iffy transfers and questionable subs or no Canto language. And neo-Miramax did sell Zu, which is more than Harvey did with it. He'll just cling onto his library no matter how badly the company goes down in flames, just to screw over other filmmakers. As for WB, it's sitting on a lot of titles which people want to see released. Hopefully, though, the Golden Harvest stuff will be available on their download-to-own service soon.

The only thing the Weinsteins are selling is debt from the same stupid decisions they made when running Miramax into the ground.
  • oh the humanity
    They're selling DVDs.

Which puts them ahead of Miramax (who at least tried to sell their unwanted films off) and even further ahead of Warner Bros. (who won't cooperate with anyone trying to buy their Golden Harvest films and who turn a blind eye to professional bootlegging of those films).

Today, 9/27/2009, at 2PM on Telefutura: Miramax's print of PRISON ON FIRE 2.

That's all these movies are good for to them. They do it wrong, but at least the Weinsteins are selling something.

humanity: "The current regime at the studio hates their sizable Asian catalog. HATES IT. They're not going to spend one penny to fix them."

To be fair to neo-Miramax, Harvey dumped that company with a lot of crappy non-Asian titles which he paid way more money for than it was worth; and the people running that place now have to work their tales off just to make the division financially solvent again.

"The new Miramax hates these movies even more than the Weinsteins did -"

Judging by how badly the Weinsteins have been handling their current Asian library, I highly doubt that. Neo-Miramax is likely just putting these titles on BD before the rights expire. No excuse for an uncut Supercop or Fist of Legend, though, especially since I saw the latter in a theater a few months ago.

"at least the Weinsteins had something akin to an abusive, sick I-love-you-that's-why-I-beat-you-bloody-and-lock-you-in-the-basement relationship with those movies."

More like a "I hate any movies which I didn't produce which are better than the stuff at my company. So I will pretend to care about your work while doing everything I can to screw it over" relationship...
  • oh the humanity
Miramax Doesn't Give A Shit. That's what stands between those films and any proper US release. The current regime at the studio hates their sizable Asian catalog. HATES IT. They're not going to spend one penny to fix them. They sold TEARS OF THE BLACK TIGER off to Magnolia and tried to sell tons of stuff to BCI (we all know how that one panned out). To Miramax it's just Telefutura filler. They can't even be bothered to sell bare-bones DVDs of anything not previously released under the Weinsteins - who shelved more than they released at Miramax and abandoned more than they took to Dragon Dynasty/Weinstein Company. The new Miramax hates these movies even more than the Weinsteins did - at least the Weinsteins had something akin to an abusive, sick I-love-you-that's-why-I-beat-you-bloody-and-lock-you-in-the-basement relationship with those movies.

Those BD re-releases of Drunken Master 2, Iron Monkey, and Hero are the Miramaxe versions. I hope whatever contracts which keep them from getting definitive editions expire soon.
