BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE (2009)

Action director Corey Yuen sure knows how to handle the ladies. A new behind-the-scenes video sneak peek at director Chris Nahon’s BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE reveals extensive wirework and three months of fight training that Yuen applied to Korean actress Gianna Jun who plays a demon-slaying vampire working for a shadowy government agency.

This film, which is based on Hiroyuki Kitakubo’s 2000 anime feature of the same name, is rumored to be coming to the U.S. at an undisclosed date courtesy of Samuel Goldwyn Films, an indie distributor that previously released the similarly themed Lucy Liu film RISE: BLOOD HUNTER and Guy Ritchie’s REVOLVER.

I’m a little concerned about the excessive use of clichéd wirework on display but it looks like Gianna has put a lot of effort into her role while Nahon’s French sensibilities should make for highly stylized visuals. Corey has also displayed a true gift for working with inexperienced leading action starlets and this film looks to deliver more elaborate martial arts action than we’ve seen from him in some time.

    I’m just hoping the movie actually gets a decent release, in spite of Elektra bombing, and Hollywood hating Asian leads in genre films.

    I loved the original 45-minute OVA anime film. I hope this is not just another eye candy fest but rather a decent story with good action.

    I agree with one person’s statement that Hollywood hates Asian leads in genre films.
