With ninjas climbing their way back into mainstream pop culture with the Wachowshis upcoming NINJA ASSASSIN movie, it’s not a big surprise to discover that a sequel to BEVERLY HILLS NINJA, originally starring the deceased Chris Farley, has been greenlit. However, given that the entire movie hinged on Farley’s performance, it’s a little odd that Sony is bothering to make a sequel without him.
BEVERLY HILLS NINJA writer Mitch Klebanoff has scripted the tentatively titled TOKYO JONES: THE LEGEND OF THE DANCING NINJA and is also set to make his directing debut on the film.
The plot loosely follows the formula of the first film. It deals with a Caucasian named Ikki who is raised by an Asian family after a mix up at sea. Trained in the ways of the ninja, Ikki believes he is the legendary “Dancing Ninja.” When his master is murdered, he goes to Hollywood in search of the killer who is known as evil action movie star Ansel LaDouche.
Although primarily a goofball comedy vehicle for Farley’s antics, the original BEVERLY HILLS NINJA featured MORTAL KOMBAT’s Robin Shou and stunt work from notable genre veterans including Jeff Imada, Hiro Koda, Simon Rhee, Koichi Sakamoto, and Roger Yuan.
The film begins shooting in Korea and L.A. in September.
