Production has begun on THE EAGLE OF THE NINTH, a feature film adaptation of British author Rosemary Sutcliff’s 1954 historical adventure novel of the same name with FIGHTING and G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA star Channing Tatum in the lead and Kevin McDonald (THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND) directing. Shooting is taking place in Hungary and Scotland with additional cast members that include Jamie Bell (JUMPER), Donald Sutherland (INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS) and Mark Strong (the villain in Guy Ritchie’s SHERLOCK HOLMES).
The film is set in Britain in 140 AD, 20 years after the unexplained disappearance of Rome’s Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland. Young centurion Marcus Aquila (Tatum) arrives from Rome to investigate the disappearance and clear the name of his father who commanded the missing legion. Accompanied by a British slave, Marcus ventures north past Hadrian’s Wall to confront savage tribes, make peace with his father’s memory and retrieve the legion’s lost golden emblem.
Originally written for children, Sutcliff’s novel was previously adapted into a 1977 BBC series starring Anthony Higgins. From footage of this series below it’s apparent that period fighting action plays a part in the story.
