Beginning this week, Criterion has made 35 more of its films available for instant viewing on Netflix through their streaming service. PC and Xbox Live subscribers will now be able to watch jidai geki classics SEVEN SAMURAI, YOJIMBO, SANJURO, RASHOMON, and THE HIDDEN FORTRESS instantly.

SEVEN SAMURAI (1954)

The Criterion Cast has posted a complete list of newly added Criterion films with descriptions.

Hopefully, this means we’ll eventually see more of the Criterion Collection available for instant viewing. Other relevant titles they could add include THRONE OF BLOOD, YOUTH OF THE BEAST, the SAMURAI TRILOGY, SWORD OF THE BEAST, KILL!, HENRY V, SPARTACUS, THE SWORD OF DOOM, and KAGEMUSHA.

Criterion currently has no claim to THE KILLER or HARD BOILED, do they? I'd think making them available for instant streaming would run afoul of the Weinstein Company's rights.

That is a good start for Criterion. These movies exemplars for the genre and Japanese cinema. I hope that they add more. The Hidden Fortress was used as on of the catalysts for Star Wars Episode 4 “A New Hope”.

Wonderful, classic news, these are the movies that everyone should see weather you are a m.a. movie fan or not keep these classic coming, such as the best of the best Seven Samurai.

This is GREAT news and I extend my heartfelt thanks to Criterion! As you all know, finding quality films on the great Netflix Watch Instantly service is a tough job and Criterion has just made it exponentially easier. My faves that I will watch again: HIDDEN FORTRESS and YOJIMBO (some of the best flicks ever put to celluloid); HIGH AND LOW and IKIRU (must-sees); MY LIFE AS A DOG; ONIBABA; RASHOMON; SANJURO; SEVEN SAMURAI; and SEVENTH SEAL.

I am also really looking forward to several I have never seen: WILD STRAWBERRIES (I LOVE Bergman films); LE CORBEAU (I LOVE Clouzot films); THE LOWER DEPTHS (the beloved Kurosawa AND Renoir?); et. al.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You have already made my New Year happier!
