On August 17, production on the new Tony Jaa-Panna Rittikrai collaboration that is TOM YUM GOONG 2, or THE PROTECTOR 2 as it will be known in the United States, had begun. However, aside from the already mentioned Jaa and Jeeja Yanin (CHOCOLATE) joining the cast, three more familiar names have been announced.
Thai stuntman turned action star Dan Chupong, French-born Chinese martial arts ace Kazu Patrick Tang, and American martial artist Marrese Crump have joined the cast of the upcoming sequel to the 2005 Thai hit action film. The three new cast members have been busy with their work in films. Chupong starred in Panna Rittikrai’s 2004 version of BORN TO FIGHT and took on Tony Jaa as the main villain in ONG-BAK 3. Tang appeared in the Thai action flicks RAGING PHOENIX and Rittikrai’s recent film, BKO: BANGKOK KNOCKOUT.
Crump has worked in both the US and Asia. The Florida-based martial artist co-starred and served as fight choreographer for WRONG SIDE OF TOWN, which had a nice knife fight between Crump and former pro wrestler Dave Bautista. Crump had recently worked with The RZA on THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS. When TOM YUM GOONG finishes production, Crump will remain in Thailand to work on his long awaited collaboration with Panna Rittikrai, FORMLESS.
TOM YUM GOONG is currently shooting for a late 2011 or 2012 release date.
