Sony Pictures has confirmed reports that (500) DAYS OF SUMMER helmer Marc Webb has been picked to direct a reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. In addition, it has been revealed that Webb has signed on for a trilogy.

Insider buzz suggests that the studio is looking to cast unknowns in the lead in part to keep the budget of the first film within a relatively modest $80 million.

As for the plot, unconfirmed reports suggest the reboot will take as inspiration the recent “Ultimate Spider-Man” comics that focus more on Peter Parker’s high school angst than his crime-fighting heroics.

If this is true, the next SPIDER-MAN movie may have more in common with TWILIGHT than other superhero movies like IRON MAN.

Production on the next film is expected to begin sometime this year.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Peter Parker? He did bust some back flips on his SNL monologue and he does have that witty nerd thing going on. I can kinda see it.

Did you just say TWILIGHT? Spider-Man, you are dead to me.

I wouldn't say Joseph Gordon-Levitt is unknown. He has been in more independent films though.

You know, I thought what Spider-man needs is for Peter Parker to be played by a smug hipster, too! Oh, and who wants to see him fighting crime when we can endure him going through awkward adolescence?! That's almost as “brilliant” an idea as giving him a clone.

Recipe for disaster right there. And good, I want to see a Spidey reboot utterly fail and then Marvel buys back the rights to Spidey with profits from all the Avengers movies they are doing. Then we can get Spider-Man done in-house and it'll be awesome.

zenshite like i told you already…it doesnt work that way…

It will be dead end for Sony with Spiderman franchise! I can't believe they stop our hero and reboot it? Something bad is done for Spidey!

World-wide earnings of $890,871,626 hardly sounds like a failure. Domestic earnings alone were $336,530,303.
