I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around this one. I cannot decide what is more unusual, that Chinese filmmakers are going to adapt “Don Quixote,” Miguel de Cervantes’ Spanish novel centered on a brain-addled, would-be knight-errant into a wuxia film or that the same film is going to be filmed entirely in 3-D.

Chinese media are reporting that production is set to begin later this month on DON QUIXOTE, a 70 million yuan, live-action film to be directed entirely in 3-D by Agan with action direction from Xiong Xin-xin.

Although not officially announced, comic actor Guo Tao is expected to star in the title role with fellow comedians Huang Bo and Liu Hua also likely cast.

The ancient city of Chang’an will provide the backdrop for much of the film which will see the knightly spirit of the original novel adapted into the style of chivalry commonly found in wuxia tales.

Professionals from the U.S. and Germany have been hired to assist in working with the 3-D technology to shoot a three-minute trailer for the film. Xiong has reportedly stated that filming action scenes in 3-D is very challenging.

Similar technology was used by Yuen Woo-ping to shoot the action sequences in his upcoming kung fu movie TRUE LEGEND.
