Zoe Bell in ANGEL OF DEATH (2009)

There is a new web original action series from comic book writer Ed Brubaker that is giving TV some serious competition where straight up action is concerned. Bristling with a gritty crime story and raw combat, ANGEL OF DEATH stars stunt actress Zoe Bell as a cold-blooded assassin who gets a knife jammed through her skull during a mission and begins seeing ghosts that compel her to target her employers.

ANGEL OF DEATH automatically gets high points just for casting a real stunt actress in the lead, who knows how to fight and do her own stunts. Apart from a few exceptions, this is something that has been sorely missing from film and TV production worldwide.

Bell is hardly a household name but that’s because she has largely been working as a Hollywood stuntwoman since starting out on popular TV series XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS. The New Zealand native doubled Uma Thurman in KILL BILL: VOL. 1 and VOL. 2. After doing stunt work in GRINDHOUSE, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino cast her in a co-starring role in DEATH PROOF opposite Kurt Russell. ANGEL OF DEATH is her first starring role.

Brubaker is a two-time Eisner Award winner who has written for a variety of mainstream DC and Marvel comic books including “Batman,” “Daredevil” and “Iron Fist.”

As of this writing, 10 episodes are available for viewing at Crackle.com, a site that also hosts several licensed martial arts movies including ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA and IRON MONKEY. Users can also find condensed episodes of popular animated series THE JACKIE CHAN ADVENTURES.

The complete ANGEL OF DEATH series will be released on DVD July 7th courtesy of indie distributor North American Motion Pictures. It’s now available for pre-order at Amazon.com.

YES!!! A real stunt person as opposed to an inflatable doll. Reminds me of Joss Wedon’s story of how WB wanted Willow the nerd to basically be a super model in glasses as opposed to Allison Hannigan.
