It was recently announced that U.S. distributor FUNimation acquired 15 Shaw Brothers classics from BCI Eclipse, the distributor that parent company Navarre Corporation closed down in 2008. FUNimation, a company known for its anime releases, isn’t wasting any time in getting theses titles out. We now have cover art and release dates for the first four, a complete list of future titles and a groovy promo video.

I just noticed that they added some pretty cheesy taglines to the covers too. Oh well. At least they're getting released.

I'll buy these and I like the art. It's different, stop whining.

“Stop whining” – the rallying cry of the indifferent and mediocre. I remember when that was what they told people who wanted to watch FIST OF LEGEND in Cantonese. If people had “stopped whining”, Miramax's PRINCESS MONONOKE would be dub-only, Dragon Dynasty would never have existed, SHAOLIN SOCCER would probably still be collecting dust on the shelf at Disney, and every Hong Kong DVD would have a terrible-sounding 5.1 remix and nothing else. Why would Funimation not want to know if the people who they wanted to sell DVDs to thought the cover art looked like shit? It doesn't make any sense – any company that doesn't listen to the “whining” of its customers deserves to fail spectacularly.

I don't even think these covers are THAT bad. I mean, they're bad, but we're not talking Palm JSA or Miramax INFERNAL AFFAIRS levels of “OMGWTF is that BS!?” They're at least coherent and contrary to what others here are saying, they're anything but amateur. They're just a bit retarded – by modern marketing standards, that's a compliment.

i'm just glad invincible shaolin got the clean up. not only it's a classic, the venoms are in it.

i knew funimation was going to attempt this, because after the dragon balls, and other animes, they started releasing a japanese samurai movie, and i was like surprise.

if funimation is re-releasing those titles… it's going to be dubbed over… again? with those dragonball z dubbers?

  • Atherton

well I hear I guess and it's a case by case basis. but I'm only talking about these covers and the aforementioned titles you mentioned. so yeah stop whining.

  • SoWutIfMahSnSux

i hope funimation doesnt screw around with these like they did dragonball z

The Fourteen Amazons cover really is pretty awful. The others are at least okay. The Opium and the Kung Fu Master cover is practically… acceptable.

Either way, I'ma pre-order Hong Kong Godfathers. Comes out the day before my birthday. I am excite.

There is little in the art department to tie the movies together – that band across the middle does not say we belong together as part of a larger collective. Pick one style and go with it.

Make my day! I've seen a few of these at sub-par quality but have been dying to see THE 14 AMAZONS in particular. I love Shaw Brothers films!
