At the recent Sundance Film Festival, a rumor emerged that the Seth Rogen-written adaptation of THE GREEN HORNET was going to be dead after the departure of Hong Kong actor/director Stephen Chow. We reported in December that Chow was leaving the project due to “creative differences” with executives over at Sony Pictures. However, the following update has emerged.

THE GREEN HORNET

Both Dark Horizons and Ain’t It Cool News report that not only is the project still alive at Sony but Stephen Chow is still involved in the film. While Chow is no longer the director of the film, he will still play Kato, the martial artist sidekick of the title character, originally played by Keye Luke in the classic 1940s serial and by Bruce Lee on the short-lived 1960s series.

The news about Chow’s role as Kato was also confirmed by Tin Kai-Man, Chow’s co-star in SHAOLIN SOCCER (2001) and KUNG FU HUSTLE (2004). Tin is a member of the director’s board of Chow’s Hong Kong-based Star Overseas company. A recent interview with Tin revealed that Chow is also planning his next Hong Kong film, JOURNEY TO THE WEST, but is remaining to play Kato. Details can be found at the Monkey Peaches website.

As much as fans wish they could see Chow’s vision of THE GREEN HORNET on the screen, it still will feel somewhat a good to see him remain as Kato. THE GREEN HORNET is due for release in 2010 from Sony Pictures.

i agree with “sowutifmahsnsux”, worried about Rogen as Green Hornet. but anyways, KOOOL! GREEN HORNET! and also “JOURNEY TO THE WEST” WHEWWWWWW!!! MONKEY KING!!!!

wtf, Seth is gonna play the green hornet? i thought he just wrote the script? its going to be crap, Seth Rogen is a fat pig.

i’m more excited about Journey to the West, because Chow will be returning as the Monkey King. A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandora’s Box and Part Two: Cinderella are like some of his top films. if you never seen Chow’s movies before, these 2 would be it.

Slow down people, Seth isn’t going to ruin anything. First off, give the guy a chance before determining he’s ruining the movie. If you’ve seen him lately, he’s lost a ton of weight and bulked up. I saw him and thought, “Holy crap you look awesome,” before realizing it was for the movie. So he definitely has committed himself a lot.

And yeah, Chow’s Chinese Odyssey’s are both really awesome and I can’t wait for a Journey to the West update. But I thought I heard that he wasn’t going to be the Monkey King this time? True? or am I just making things up?

It’ll probably be utter crap but it’s not as if they’re ruining the memory of anything that inspiring anyway. Green Hornet was pretty feeble.

I agree with CaptainBoosh. I think Seth might just surprise everyone and make himself worthy of playing The Green Hornet.

I believe that Chow is NOT going to play Monkey King in the new Journey to the West movie. But now it is up in the air. He wanted the role of Tang Monk, but one of the financiers from Taiwan said Chow should play Monkey King again, so who knows at this point?

[so what if my son sucks] is one heck of a screen name – can’t wait to see what that advances to!

    Still concerned with this title….

Money men and their opinions – getting in the way of creative pursuits….
