At the recent Sundance Film Festival, a rumor emerged that the Seth Rogen-written adaptation of THE GREEN HORNET was going to be dead after the departure of Hong Kong actor/director Stephen Chow. We reported in December that Chow was leaving the project due to “creative differences” with executives over at Sony Pictures. However, the following update has emerged.
Both Dark Horizons and Ain’t It Cool News report that not only is the project still alive at Sony but Stephen Chow is still involved in the film. While Chow is no longer the director of the film, he will still play Kato, the martial artist sidekick of the title character, originally played by Keye Luke in the classic 1940s serial and by Bruce Lee on the short-lived 1960s series.
The news about Chow’s role as Kato was also confirmed by Tin Kai-Man, Chow’s co-star in SHAOLIN SOCCER (2001) and KUNG FU HUSTLE (2004). Tin is a member of the director’s board of Chow’s Hong Kong-based Star Overseas company. A recent interview with Tin revealed that Chow is also planning his next Hong Kong film, JOURNEY TO THE WEST, but is remaining to play Kato. Details can be found at the Monkey Peaches website.
As much as fans wish they could see Chow’s vision of THE GREEN HORNET on the screen, it still will feel somewhat a good to see him remain as Kato. THE GREEN HORNET is due for release in 2010 from Sony Pictures.
