Jackie Chan’s public comments last year about Chinese people needing to be controlled and that too much freedom may harm China continue to haunt the action superstar apparently. Reader’s Digest recently held its annual poll to find out who the most trusted personalities in Hong Kong were. Chan came in at 77th out of 80, behind the city’s unpopular, Beijing-appointed Chief Executive Donald Tsang.
The number one pick for most trustworthy personality is retired actress and anti-child abuse campaigner Josephine Siao. In the 1960s, she starred in a variety of wuxia films and years later played Jet Li’s wacky mother in the wire-fu comedy FONG SAI YUK.
Chow Yun-fat, who is arguably the second most internationally famous (living) Hong Kong star behind Jackie Chan, came in sixth.
After Chan’s comments drew widespread criticism last year, a spokesman for Chan responded by claiming that they were taken out of context. In a city that still eyes China’s Communist government warily after being handed back to them following 156 years of British colonial rule, that apparently isn’t convincing enough.
