Update 2: Yet more KUNG FU KID pics to share. Our contributor Albert Valentin suggests that Jackie Chan’s opponent (pictured below) may be martial arts actor Yu Rong-guang, playing the bullies’ coach. It looks like him and he has worked with Chan before so it’s likely but unconfirmed at this point. Also, the gentleman holding down Jaden Smith’s foot is likely stunt coordinator Wu Gang. According to my well-informed colleague, Wu is currently acting as head of Chan’s JC Stunt Team while former leader Nicky Li works on other non-Jackie Chan related projects. Wu is also stunt coordinator on Chan’s other upcoming Hollywood film, THE SPY NEXT DOOR.

I still don’t know whether it’s called THE KARATE KID or THE KUNG FU KID but director Harold Zwart’s remake of THE KARATE KID, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, has a new production still circulating that depicts the two stars in an apparent bonding moment.

Chan has seemingly fully embraced family films in Hollywood these days. His other movie coming out here is kid pic THE SPY NEXT DOOR, also starring Billy Ray Cyrus and George Lopez. Based on the previously released trailer, this film appears aimed at a pre-adolescent audience. It opens in theaters on January 15. No worries if this film looks too tame. The Hughes brothers’ post-apocalyptic actioner THE BOOK OF ELI opens the same week with Denzel Washington performing non-nonsense martial arts action originating from Jeff Imada and Dan Inosanto.

    Why is it the US Jackie Chan films, always have really bad posters with a snap shot of Jackie's head pasted onto someone elses body ? Have a think look at some artwork from US distributors and count the number…

    The studio is stupid if they're calling this “The Karate Kid,” when the pic above shows Chan and Smith on top of the Great Wall of China.

    This in my eyes will never compare to the greatness that was Macchio and Morita in the original movie. I will watch this “remake” but I know it's going to be very difficult to sit through because any movie that Chan has been in lately has been corny.

    This new movie will be directed toward 10-13 year olds and I don't see it relating to an older audience as the original did.

    It definitely is Yu Rong Guang. Jackie confirmed this on his official homepage. He wrote the following in his diary on his site

    “One after another, each of the main actresses finished filming their parts. After waiting for a while, I finally got to film my action scenes, which will be filmed over the next couple of days. This time I get to film an action scene with Yu Rong Guang. We start off by fighting with our bare hands and then we end up fighting with wooden stools”

    “I feel very comfortable shooting action scenes with Yu Rong Guang because he’s also an action actor and he knows how to be careful when we’re fighting.”

    And the little girl with Jaden in Hao Wen Wen, who plays Jaden's “love interest”. I know…I thought it sounded funny too.

    According to Jackie's site, the title as it stands right now is KUNG FU KID.

    “Never compare to the greatness that was Macchio and Morita” LOL Come on, man. I've never seen Ralph Maccio kick 90 degrees, Jaden is a better actor than old Ralph and Jackie can act and fight better than 20 Pat Morita's. However, the only thing debatable is the script. If its not written well than its not the actors' fault. We have a much more solid cast than the “Karate Kid”. Already we know we have Jaden Smith (“The Day The Earth Stood Still, Pursuit of Happiness) Jackie Chan (nuff said), and Yu Rong Guang (Iron Monkey which is a kung fu movie standard). Dude you need to get real and stop hating on the awsome lil black boy and the older chinese kung fu veterans. We'll talk more intellectually after we've seen the movie. ;) Oh yeah. What has Ralph done since “Karate Kid III” that shows off his greatness? Please let me know. Don't worry I'll wait……

    I was one of the people who origanlly poo pooed all over the “karate kid remake” but based on what I've seen so far it looks like the kid actually learned some real skill.So okay I'll give it a chance.I always try to admit when I might be wrong. Also this may wipe the bad taste left in my mouth by Forbiden Kingdom.The whole only little white kids get to have martial arts adventures thing is afterall very cliche.

    It's not like Jackie's been singled out. American movie posters are almost always total garbage and this has been the case for years and years now, going back well into the '90s. Nowadays Magnolia is the only US company who even tries to make their promotional artwork look good.

    I have watched them both, and they are all a very nice film, it's a good film for your entire family.
