On August 31, 2010, Lionsgate Films will be releasing BEATDOWN, the latest mixed martial arts-theme action film presented by MMA outlet Tapout, on DVD and Blu-Ray.
The film stars Rudy Youngblood (Mel Gibson’s APOCALYPTICO) as Brandon, a respected street brawler who has a falling out with the mob which results in the death of his brother and the mob’s money being stolen. Hiding out in a small town with his father, played by Danny Trejo (MACHETE), Brandon finds himself involved in the underworld of cage fighting. With the help of a former cage fighting champion, played by UFC fighter Michael “The Count” Bisping, Brandon hopes to get a massive payday and settle his score with the mob once and for all.
Much like Tapout’s previous titles, the focus of the promotional ads all focus on the mixed martial artists cast in the film. Michael Bisping makes his film debut and gets in on some action as the mentor of the film’s protagonist. Bisping takes on the likes of Heath “The Texas Crazy Horse” Herring (NEVER SURRENDER, CIRCLE OF PAIN), former WWE wrestler turned MMA fighter Bobby Lashley, and Michael “Quick” Swick. However, the two main rivals of the film are played by actors Rudy Youngblood and Eric Balfour (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE), who plays Brandon’s nemesis in the cage fights, Victor.
Serving as stunt coordinator is veteran stuntman and martial artist Marcus Young (BIG STAN, KUNG POW: ENTER THE FIST) while Don Lee serves as fight coordinator. With these two working as the choreographers and the plot of the film intact, it is quite possible that we could be dealing with a MMA film on the level of the recently released CIRCLE OF PAIN as opposed to Tapout’s first few films, which starred Hector Echavarria, which were panned by practically everyone.
BEATDOWN comes to DVD and Blu-Ray on August 31, 2010.
