Michael Gondry

EW.com reports that arty director Michael Gondry is in talks to direct the GREEN HORNET film after Stephen Chow dropped out late last year, leaving Sony Pictures scrambling to get the Seth Rogen-Evan Goldberg penned project back on the fast track.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS star Seth Rogan is set to portray debonair newspaper publisher and crime fighter Britt Reid, aka The Green Hornet. The comic actor was sporting a trimmed down physique at the recently televised Academy Awards, suggesting he’s getting in shape for the role.

While no longer directing, Chow is still expected to portray Reid’s martial arts-fighting sidekick Kato. The role was filled on the original TV series by the late Bruce Lee and Chow is one of his biggest fans. The comic genius behind SHAOLIN SOCCER and KUNG FU HUSTLE has been paying homage to Bruce in virtually all of his films since the early 1990s. He’s not a kung fu star by trade but has kept himself in excellent physical condition. My concern is that he’ll be 47 in June, which makes him old enough to be Rogen’s father and certainly past the point where he should be playing anyone’s superhero sidekick, even Kato, who we all know was the better half of this dynamic duo.

I’m also not comfortable with the idea of Chow being directed by a Hollywood filmmaker but Gondry is certainly an interesting choice. I’ve only seen his movie ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF A SPOTLESS MIND and it’s a brilliantly conceived and executed drama that is anything but the same old Hollywood schlock that resulted in all of Jet Li, Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-fat’s flawed non-Asian films. With Gondry on board this could turn out to be a film just as quirky as any of Chow’s past work. We’ll have to wait and see.

Michael Gondry was linked to this project as far back as ’98. Then it sat on the shelf until Kevin Smith got the call a couple of years ago. He quit and somehow Seth Rogen got hold of it. Guess things have come full circle.

I’m wondering why Donnie Yen has not been mentioned for the role of Kato (or as Seraph in the Matrix after Jet Li turned it down).

Donnie is too busy in HK, since Ip Man is becoming a Franchise.

Collin Chou would be a good choice, but I believe he wants to be more of an actor. He even turned down the lead role of Ninja Assassin, now starring Rain.

I love Stephen Chow, but I think they should cast a no-name to get some new blood out there.

I’ll never get used to the idea of Gondry directing this movie. I keep thinking of the Levi’s commercial with Dustin Nguyen, but that was directed by Jonathan Glazer. The only action scenes I’m aware of Gondry directing are Dave Grohl slapping guys around with a giant hand in the Everlong video, and sweded trailers of “Robocop” and “Boyz in the Hood.” At the very least I’m curious as to what the end result will be.

Vincent Zhou Man Chuk? Or even Wu Jing. He has the face of a comedian. Be interesting to see him paired with Rogaine.

    Three words: Pitaf and Catwoman.

I’m not sure about Jet Li or probably even worrying about action sequences as people mentioned above. This seems like it’s gonna be a comedy way before anything else. Everyone attached to it has a comic background.

I think Chan Kwok Kwan would rock as Kato!

I love Gondry. His part of Tokyo! is surreal, but humane(and funny as hell). Its like Kafka on film(but, again, funnier).

The Tokyo! DVD drops June 30th (i think). You can pre-order on the website http://tokyothemovie.com/
