It has been nearly fifteen years since we last saw Korean-American martial arts action star Phillip Rhee, best known for his BEST OF THE BEST film series. Now, he is returning to martial arts with a new film geared towards the family.
The film can be best described as BEST OF THE BEST meets THE BAD NEWS BEARS or even THE KARATE KID meets LITTLE GIANTS. Since leaving the action film world, Rhee has worked mainly on children’s programming and also has been involved in visual effects for television and films. This will mark Rhee’s return to the director’s chair and in a martial arts film. Rhee describes the film as his “passion project”.
The big news is that some martial arts legends are set to appear in the film, perhaps as themselves to act as mentors to the titular Underdogs. They include Richard Norton, Dan Inosanto, James Lew, Simon Rhee, Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, and Don “The Dragon” Wilson.
Other confirmed casting include actress Mirelly Taylor and kid martial arts champion Rayna Vallandingham.
THE UNDERDOGS is currently in production for a 2014 release. For more information check out Phillip Rhee’s Official Facebook Page
