PROTEGE (DVD - Dragon Dynasty)

Genius Products has just released their latest Asian action title on DVD through The Weinstein Company’s Dragon Dynasty label. The film is PROTÉGÉ (2007), a gritty crime thriller from Derek Yee, director of ONE NITE IN MONGKOK and SHINJUKU INCIDENT. Based on a true story, it stars Hong Kong heavyweights Andy Lau, Daniel Wu and Louis Koo.

“PROTÉGÉ is the saga of a young cop infiltrating the deepest levels of a secret drug ring. He survives seven years of violent, nail-biting close calls, as he works his way from dealer to heir apparent. Every step consolidates his power and reveals another piece of his boss’s operations, bringing him closer to destroying a brutal heroin empire…or inheriting it.”

Exclusive Preview

I have not seen this film yet but it looks like a good one. The press release quotes my favorite Hong Kong movie review site, LoveHKFilm, as saying that PROTÉGÉ is “enormously entertaining.” Others apparently felt the same way. The film garnered nine 2007 Hong Kong award nominations and Lau won the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in the film.

I quite enjoyed this flick as it hearkens a little back to the crime drama genre that has since passed from Hong Kong (unless you count comedy crime movies). Infernal Affairs is gone and Johnnie To is still making plenty of awesome movies, so this one is definitely a good way to fill the gap. I like the mix of veteran actors with some of the new blood, rather than a cast full of teen idols.

I am getting to enjoy Daniel Wu as an actor more and more after this, Blood Brothers and The Banquet (Legend of the Black Scorpion, ugh).

Definitely worth checking out. Ric Meyers recommended this to me a year and a half ago at Comic-Con and I passed to end up seeing it much later and totally regretting that decision.
