Kevin Tancharoen

Dance choreographer-turned-filmmaker Kevin Tancharoen will helm sci-fi actioner ARCANA, with Brett Ratner and Jay Stern of Rat Entertainment producing for Universal Pictures.

Developed by Tancharoen and dancer/actor Harry Shum Jr., and scripted by John Ridley (U-TURN), ARCANA is described as a live-action graphic novel influenced by BLADE RUNNER that includes martial arts and production techniques similar to Zack Snyder’s sword and sandal actioner 300.

I know there is little love for RUSH HOUR trilogy director Brett Ratner among genre fans but this looks like Tancharoen’s baby and we can hope he retains a measure of creative control.

Tancharoen’s background is in dance choreography which has led to projects for MTV and his first feature film, a remake of FAME which is due in theaters on September 25. As fight choreography is similar to dance choreography it will be very interesting to see what Tancharoen comes up with for his first action movie.
