Over the past few days, there have been emerging reports about martial arts films getting the remake and reboot treatment.
Dark Horizons reports that the Weinstein Company is joining forces with Malyasia-based Celestial Pictures to remake two Shaw Brothers classics with John Fusco (THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM) handling scripting duties.
The first film in question is COME DRINK WITH ME, the 1966 wuxia pian starring Cheng Pei-Pei as the heroic swordswoman Golden Swallow. who must rescue her brother from a group of bandits with the help of a mysterious beggar. Wishful thinking can only perceive that they cast Cheng’s daughter Marsha Yuan in the role of Golden Swallow in the reboot, as she is practically the spitting image of her mother from this martial arts classic. However, should Marsha Yuan not be casted, who would you want for the role of the heroic swordswoman?
The second film to get the remake treatment is AVENGING EAGLE, originally released in 1978 and directed by Sun Chung. This wuxia pian revolves around an orphan raised to become an assassin only to have a conscience and decides to live a peaceful life, much to the chagrin of his foster father. Ti Lung and the late Alexander Fu Sheng starred in the original.
Deadline has reported that two Jean-Claude Van Damme classics are in line to be rebooted.
Last year, it was announced that SALT helmer Philip Noyce would be directing the reboot to Van Damme’s breakout film BLOODSPORT. However, Noyce is no longer directing, but has written the original script of the new version. James McTeigue (V FOR VENDETTA) will direct the film, about mercenaries in Brazil who compete in a Vale Tudo tournament. Noyce co-wrote the screenplay with Robert Mark Kamen (TAKEN), with McTeigue offering input. Relativity Media will be producing BLOODSPORT.
The other Van Damme film to get the remake treatment? KICKBOXER. Radar Pictures will be producing the film. In the original film, the younger brother of a kickboxing champion learns Muay Thai to avenge the crippling of his brother. The major news revolving KICKBOXER is that making his Hollywood directorial debut is Hong Kong-based actor, musician, and filmmaker Stephen Fung (TAI CHI HERO). Jim McGrath and Dimitri Logothetis are writing KICKBOXER.
Expect the remakes of COME DRINK WITH ME, AVENGING EAGLE, BLOODSPORT, and KICKBOXER anywhere within 2014 and 2015 should they come into fruition.
