A new trailer is out for Yuen Woo-ping’s upcoming kung fu actioner TRUE LEGEND. It’s reveals a lot more action and story than the first trailer.

This film is a highly anticipated return to form for the greatest kung fu moviemaker currently working. It’s not only the first film directed solely by Yuen in 14 years it also goes back to his roots by exploring the origins of Drunken Fist, the Chinese kung fu style he and Jackie Chan previously made famous in DRUNKEN MASTER back in 1978. The film is scheduled for release in Asia beginning February 11.

Yuen Woo-ping re-imagines the exploits of Chinese martial arts folk hero Beggar Su. Late Qing-era war hero Su Qi-er ( Vincent Zhao) retires from the military to live with his wife and son until he’s attacked and severely wounded by his vengeful step-brother Yuang (Andy On) who wields the dark martial art of the Five Venom Fist. Su and his wife escape but their son is kidnapped by Yuang. While recovering from his injuries, Su hones his fighting skills with the help of a mysterious Bearded Man (Leung Kar-yan) and his apprentice Lord Wushu (Jay Chou). Su’s wife is killed while trying to recover her son and Su falls into despair which leads him to become a drunken beggar. When his son faces a new threat from Imperialist Westerners, Su musters all his fighting skills and unwittingly develops the Drunken Fist technique in the process.

    Wow!
    @ Kareem
You have no idea what you're talking about. If you knew anything about martial arts and Yuen Woo-ping's master choreography/directing then you may change your mind. The style, and the whole look of the film appears to be exceptional. The master is back, and I don't think this film will disappoint.

uh black people have bad taste… lol.

anyway, at first I wasn't really sure what to think about this film, because it just seems like any film that involves YWP, it's gonna be about these historical chinese martial artist. he has done enough for them, i say, move on to something else. If he keeps making more movies about Wong Fei Hung, Huo Yuan Jia, Fong Sai Yuk, on and on, and more Tai Chi, and more Drunken Fist… are you people still gonna watch it? or you'll finally wake up and realize that it's really nostalgic, and rehashing these characters over and over again, is getting old…

anyway, i'm sure a lot of us here seen YWP's movies, and you all know that he's done stuff on Beggar Su… but i dunno, the trailer looks good, the fight choreography is intriguing, and since Xun Zhou is in the film, it will be worth a watch. she is hot, she's the girl from Painted Skin with Yen and Zhao Wei.

did you guys notice David Carradine? lol.

To BruisedLo: I know your probably joking but please don't let one likely trool ruin our whole race. (For all we know he could be white.) I personally love alomst anytype of quality martial arts movies and this one looks good. It's good to see Vincent Zhao finally getting a decent movie role. The only problem is I'll probably end up waiting over a year and a half for a region 1 release like I am for Ong Bak 2 and Ip Man.

compare yuen woo wing to laukar leung….drunken master to legendary weapons of china….fearless (which was more realistic than his traditional style) to drunken master 2…..there is no comparison…fuk a yuen wo ping renaissance im tryna see lau sifu

  • baguapaul

I personnally am tired of all the fake wire work. Bring back realism!

  • darrinkemp

could we please stop with the bs racial name calling.and before you ask,yes i'm a brother.from the boogie down.what.

  • stdthagreat

uh ignorant people have bad taste…lol

Seriously though I can see what kareem is saying. I have a friend who complains of all the cgi in all of the new movies. Hell he jokes on me for my love of Sammo Hung movies. He's a shaw brothers fanatic. To me i like realism too but i don't hate wirework. Wirework can be good if it is applied right to the style of the movie. True Legend looks good to me and I can't wait to see it.

  • Rhythm-X

uh black people have bad taste… lol.

    Fucking foul.

…Is kareem a troll? How can he not be?

Anyhow, I'm tired of hearing people bitch about wirework. The oldest martial arts films have more in common with Storm Riders 2 than Drunken Master 2. Something like this is authentic enough as far as the world of film is concerned. And many of the films we love are not choreographed for realism, including many of Lau Kar-Leung's films. If you want real, watch real fighting. These are movies, people.

  • kareem

what do u mean by troll?? w.e it is it cant b worse den a mawfukn swine, PIGsy

  • kareem

lau kar leung ventured away from realism and shit a few times wit spiritual boxer and shit like dat but if u tryn to say dat da vast majority of his work isnt authentic kung fu den u never got past horse stance nigga

  • kareem

and im n da 38th chamber

  • stdthagreat

It's Kareem's opinion. Let his voice be heard. If he has a problem with wirework and cgi then let it be heard. I have a problem with choppy editing and quick cuts! I'm not too into Shaw Brothers movies, but I love Lau Kar Leung's films. The way he crafts a message into his films and fight scenes are always superb. Mad Monkey KungFu, Heroes of the East, Legendary Weapons of China, 36 Chambers, all classics.

A film in the classic wushu style. Just what I've been waiting for! Bring it on!

  • http://www.wirthconsulting.org Kraak Mo

Ahem. After watching the trailer, perhaps there's a tad too much wire work for my liking. But overall, I think that I can live with it because the film also stars Michele Yeoh, another one of my all time faves.

  • http://goldenpigsy.blogspot.com GoldenPigsy

@kareem: Lol, whatevs. Get some class.

@stdathagreat: He can make his voice heard all he wants, and I am free to disagree. You see, I have opinions too. I'm not saying that anybody should or shouldn't like something, but let's keep this stuff in perspective. Some of the people who regularly post here expect for people on the other side of the world to cater to their tastes in a relatively short segment of a hundred year long film tradition, and choose to express this desire with arrogance, and in this case, broken English. It's tiresome.

  • darrinkemp

On the issue of wire work:I don't really like it much.I didn't like most of Shaw bros.when I was a kid.My favorites were GH.The chief style setter for havest was Sammo.Sammo almost never used wires.Ulmost.Infact if you look at most of Yuen Woo Pings early work he had very little wire work.To be honest there is room for both.If the story is good and the movie is entertaining who cares?

  • http://twitter.com/4typhive Shawn Frierson

I agree, but how many modern day kung-fu flicks do you know of that has great action and great story? Not many imo.

  • SoWutIfMahSnSux

while i think true legend will still rock, it would've been awesome if donnie yen was in the lead, reunited with yuen woo ping

  • kaye_198528

    true legend

  • rollingblue

A lot of the action here looks like a video game. Too much CGI for my taste in kung fu.

  • ug

Too much wirework, zhou has no charisma, acting looks false, feels like wannabe house of flying daggers/hero, drunk kung fu is too 'clean' and is that jay chou? shouldve just hired nicolas ste and be done with it. meh is the word.woo ping should stick to choreography and leave the storytelling to real directors like johnnie to – maybe the only worthy action HK director alive today. Methinks the matrix wired him up for life now hes too scared to let go.

  • DiP

Johnnie To isn't an action filmmaker. He makes different kinds of movies.

Johnnie To is indeed the best director in Hong Kong these days but there are other worthy directors working there too so it's not like he's the only great one.

  • The Dragon

    I'm sorry… THIS IS SOME BULL$&#*!!!
Man, when are we gonna get some GROUND-BASED, realistic, Kung Fu action? Never, I guess. UG is right; wannabe Crouching Curse of the Fearless Hero of Flying Tigers. I guess Ip Man 2 is all we get.

  • 107

I prefer classic MA action where 20 plus moves are shot without stopping but I won't let that stop me from enjoying this movie. Having to wait years to see this, now that is the big item to be mad at.

  • The Dragon

No… no. That's not the big item to be mad about… Thinking that The Kung Fu Film can be played by any POP star, non-Martial Artist, and that endless, useless, NEEDLESS wirework is acceptable by the general audience-THAT'S the big item to be MAD about! You don't want Jet Li and Donnie Yen showing up in the latest Julia Roberts Love/Comedy do you? Instead of Gerard Butler or Clive Owen?

  • Rhythm-X

You don't want Jet Li and Donnie Yen showing up in the latest Julia Roberts Love/Comedy do you? Instead of Gerard Butler or Clive Owen?

I think that would be more interesting than Gerard Butler or Clive Owen showing up in the latest Julia Roberts romantic comedy. I'm pretty sure I've already seen that movie or its functional equivalent.

Haven't seen the one where Jet Li and Donnie Yen vie for ultimate supremacy… in Julia Roberts' heart
