Sony Pictures has picked up U.S. theatrical and home video rights for Jackie Chan’s crime drama SHINJUKU INCIDENT which they plan to release February 5 on 20 screens in 10 markets with large Chinese communities.

A DVD release, with optional English and Chinese subtitles, will follow on May 25.

Chan plays an illegal Chinese immigrant in Japan who becomes involved with organized crime in order to survive the mean streets of Shinjuku.

The film also stars Naoto Takenaka, Daniel Wu and Xu Jinglei. It’s co-written and directed by former film and TV star Derek Yee.

    Cool. Thanks for letting me know. It seems to have a decent IMDB rating, so I might check it out in limited.

    According to the Variety story linked, Sony Pictures isn't releasing this theatrically – some company called Barking Cow (who?) is partnering with Emperor Motion Pictures and/or JCE. This seems less like a traditional pickup and more like a smaller scale version of what happened with D-WAR, where Korean distributor Showbox partnered with Freestyle Releasing for theatrical, and Sony Pictures handled the film on home video.

    This is good to hear.

    The film is fantastic. The only thing that should be noted though, is that there is little to no action in this. It's all drama, which is why I enjoyed it so much. Being a long time fan, to see Chan FINALLY pull off dramatic acting is pretty amazing.
