Since last writing about Michael Bassett’s gritty fantasy actioner SOLOMON KANE back in September, a new English trailer has been released for this promising looking adaptation of a Robert E. Howard pulp magazine creation. There is also a recently released poster to coincide with the French release on December 23.

SOLOMON KANE (2009)

The film stars James Purefoy as a 16th century Puritan mercenary who travels the world to fight evil in order redeem himself for having sold his soul to the devil.

Richard Ryan (THE DARK KNIGHT) is sword master and stunts are overseen by Mark Henson, Robert Lahoda and Jarsolav Peterka.

SOLOMON KANE opens in Russia on December 31 and follows with a U.K. on February 5, 2010. As for us sorry saps in the U.S. who increasingly seem to be on average six months to a year behind world action film releases, the movie has been picked up for distribution by Lionsgate but no date has been announced yet.

    Watched this a couple of months ago at Fantastic Fest. It's good. The emphasis is on the sword half of sword & sorcery (the sword play is quite nice), but there's still plenty of monsters and magic. LIves up to (rather than down to) the legacy of 80's S&S movies.

    There's already a ton of people on the youtube page for that trailer going “It looks like Van Hellsing/Vampire Hunter D!!!”

    I hope Conan turns out looking as good (better would be nice too) as this one. Bassett is a big fan of Solomon Kane, and it shows in this movie, which is the most respectful film treatment of Robert Howard's work to date.
