The surprise kung fu movie hit of 2010 is turning out to be GALLANTS, a modern-day kung fu comedy from directors Derek Kwok and Clement Cheng, and featuring classic kung fu action choreographed by Yuen Tak with veteran kung fu era stars Bruce Leung, Chen Kuan-tai, Michael Chan, Lo Meng, and Ku Kuan-chung. The film premiered in Hong Kong back in June and has been gaining positive buzz worldwide where it has since appeared in North America at the New York Asian Film Festival and the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal.

In the film, Tiger (Bruce Leung) and Dragon (Chen Kuai-tai) are washed up kung fu fighters in a rural teahouse, who are tending to their master Law (Teddy Robin) who has been in a coma for years while leaving the fate of their martial arts school in limbo. When Cheung (Wong You-nam), a young loser working for real estate developers, arrives to acquire their property for redevelopment, he instead is taken in as a pupil when Master Law wakes up. With the Law Martial Arts School back in business, its members fight to keep it running.

GALLANTS premiered just last week on DVD and VCD in Hong Kong from Kam & Ronson and can be acquired online through reputable Asian retailers such as Yesasia and DDDHouse.

    Correction for the article…

Gallents screened at the New York Asian Film Festival on July 6th. It didn't screen Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal until the 10th. So… based on that timeline, the North American Premiere was at the NYAFF, not Fantasia.

Great film none-the-less! I saw it at the NYAFF and it ruled. I believe it won the audience prize too.
