A full trailer is out for Korean director Kim Yong-gyoon’s history-based wuxia epic THE SWORD WITH NO NAME. From the look of it, the film is a glitzy, upscale blend of costume drama and all-out wuxia actioner, something akin to MUSA or HERO.

THE SWORD WITH NO NAME (2009)

The plot concerns a 19th-century bounty hunter named Moo-myoung (Jo Seung-woo) who meets and falls in love with future Joseon Empress Myeongseong (Soo-ae). After she marries King Gojong (Kim Yeong-min) and claims the throne, the lovestruck Moo-myoung becomes her personal guard. When the Empress becomes embroiled in political turmoil involving foreign nations, Moo-myoung must use his fighting skills to defend her from an invading army.

This appears to be leading man Jo Seung-woo’s first major screen fighting role, although he’s been around as a leading man for a decade in films such as THE WAR OF THE FLOWERS, LOW LIFE and H. In addition to lead actress Soo-ae, Cheon Ho-jin, Kil Geum-seong and Lee Hee-jeong also star.

The film is riding the tail end of a resurgence of interest in the real Empress Myeongseong in Korea with related novels having been published, a TV series and even a musical. She is viewed by many as a heroine for using diplomacy to strengthen the country’s independence from foreign influence.

Kim’s film is based on a wuxia comic by Yaseollok who is apparently one of Korea’s top manhua artists. As Twitch Film suggests in their coverage, this would explain the heroic swordplay spin on what would otherwise by a historical drama.

THE SWORD WITH NO NAME is scheduled for theatrical release in Korea on September 24.

I have found Korean films to be pretty entertaining on average and I'm a total sucker for historical-based films. I am looking forward to this one!

Before city of violence and Fighter in the Wind I didn't much like Korean action films but they seem to be improving. The production values of this movie look good in terms of special effects but the regular photography is not looking as sharp as chinese, japanese or even thai productions.
