POWER KIDS (2009)

Coming to Thai theaters March 5th is POWER KIDS, the latest martial arts actioner from producer Prachya Pinkaew, action director Panna Rittikrai’s stunt team and Sahamongkolfilm Co.

Directed by Krissanapong Rachata, the family actioner features young screen fighting talents culled from several films including SOM TAM co-starring Nathan Jones, pirate movie SALAD TA DIAW and BORN TO FIGHT.

Starring is Grace Narawan (SOM TAM), Sasisa Jindamanee (BORN TO FIGHT), Nantawooti Boonrapsap, Pimchanok Leuwisetpaiboon, and Paytaai Wongkamlao, son of Petchtai Wongkamlao, Tony Jaa’s male co-star in ONG-BAK and the writer, director and star of THE BODYGUARD and it’s sequel.

The plot, which involves kids taking on hostage takers led by THE REBEL star Johnny Nguyen, looks like a mixture of Stephen Chow’s FIGHT BACK TO SCHOOL and BORN TO FIGHT. The film reportedly took close to four years to put together, which is about the same amount of time it took to get CHOCOLATE made when factoring in Jeeja Yanin’s training.

One thing is clear, Panna Rittikrai and his associates do not mess around. A lot of training and preparation goes into these action films which is evidenced not only in the high quality of the onscreen action but also in all of the fighting actors’ ability to perform difficult sparring and stunt routines live.

    Wisely, he left out the “outtakes” – for this audience, no one wants to see the stars hurt accidentally.

    He is also ensuring talent for the next generation.

    You know… I sort of don’t get tired of watching Rittikrai’s choreography… no matter how many times I see the same flying double knee press to the chest in sloooow speedupnow motion. I’m kind of curious how interesting the actual action will be since we’re dealing with kids. Will they be taking hits just like their adult stars? Will there be ebb and flow, or just 5 kids kicking the crap out of terrorists?

    lol it took 4 years to make? omg. geez they ain’t pulling off a jackie chan flick here. with jackie, you can have 5 movies done already haha. the film is reminding me of martial art kid flicks like young dragons: the kung fu kids, 7 ninja kids, and 3 ninjas etc. well its nice to see johnny nguyen again, hopefully the movie won’t suck. look at those shots, they’re pretty much stuff we seen before, from jaa, and in born to fight. i don’t know about having little tony jaa kiddies in a film, …i wonder what tony thinks of it lol.

    4 years – At least they are really putting in the effort to make a really good action flick and not rushing to take advantage of an eager market simply to profit off of a craze – something that would be counterproductive. A lot of that time would have went into training – think about it – unless the timeline in the film spans 4 years, it would not make sense to see these kids get bigger and stronger as the movie progressed.

    They do not go around and say what have these other guys done that I can copy – they go – what are WE going to do next!
