Coming to the U.S. and U.K. in 2009 is a new martial arts actioner from writer, producer and star Rick Yune and director Jesse V. Johnson (PIT FIGHTER). This release comes just as Yune, who is best known for his villainous role in the James Bond film DIE ANOTHER DAY, is about to appear in another prominent role in the Wachowskis brothers’ upcoming actioner NINJA ASSASSIN.
In THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT, Yune is an assassin in Bangkok, who refuses an assignment that hits too close to home and ends up the target of his former associates.
Also starring is seasoned character actor Keith David, Bokeem Woodbine, actress Dania Ramirez (X-MEN: THE LAST STAND), and Roger Yuan (CHANDI CHOWK TO CHINA). Roger should not be confused with his brother Ron, something I recently did. Both of them worked with Woodbine on the upcoming Sony Pictures release, BLACK DYNAMITE.
Speaking of brothers, Rick is the brother of fellow actor Karl Yune who has previously appeared in SPEED RACER, as well as FORBIDDEN WARRIOR (2004), a B-grade attempt by Hollywood to tackle the fantasy wuxia genre.
THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT marks Rick Yune’s first screenwriting and producing gig. It’s the sixth directorial effort for Hollywood stunt veteran Jesse Johnson. As writer and director, Johnson is currently at work on a very interesting looking gangster film called CHARLIE VALENTINE (see trailer). It looks to have a standout performance from Raymond Barry in the title role and appears to share hard-boiled crime movie vibes with another intriguing actioner, GIVE ‘EM HELL, MALONE, starring Thomas Jane.
Stunt choreography was overseen by Garrett Warren (TRANSFORMERS, BEOWULF) with crew members that include Don Ferguson (THE PROTECTOR) and Ron Smoorenburg (WHO AM I?) among others.
Previously, it looked like THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT was going to be released in 2008 but for reasons unknown it only made it to Germany where it has received mixed reviews. But come February 23rd, the film will be arriving in the U.K. on DVD courtesy of Metrodome. The cover art (at left) looks conspicuously similar to distinctive poster art used to promote the TRANSPORTER films. A U.S. release date has not been set.
