‘Ninja Assassin’ crushed by ‘New Moon’

By Mark Pollard | Published November 30, 2009

NINJA ASSASSIN was assassinated at the box office on its opening weekend. The $40 million martial arts actioner starring Rain came in sixth with $13 million ($21 million counting Wednesday and Thursday). The film opened to 2,503 theaters.

The winner for a second week was THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON which earned $42 million to bring its two week total to a whopping $230 million. The only consolation for those us of not so pleased with a sappy, romantic teen vampire/werewolf movie setting records while a solid martial arts movie flounders is that NEW MOON has seen a 70 percent drop in ticket sales in its second week. The legions of female TWILIGHT fans must be thinning out finally.

Going forward, NINJA ASSASSIN could do better in its retention thanks to good word of mouth among fans but an “R” rating and unfavorable mainstream reviews could cancel that out. I expect the film will at least break even at the box office and earn its profits from home video and overseas sales.

This weak showing at the box office isn’t surprising. Its cast is unknown in the U.S., the rating and gore kept families away and some unimpressed critics were actually calling the film “boring.” You can call an action movie a lot of things but calling it boring may be the worst, especially when it isn’t true. Perhaps releasing such a bloodthirsty film on Thanksgiving wasn’t the best idea either but at least they weren’t competing with any other major action films.

This week, NINJA ASSASSIN will be going up against Screen Gems’ ARMORED, an action-heavy heist flick starring newcomer Columbus Short, along with Matt Dillon and Laurence Fishburne. It’s directed by Nimrod Antal, a Hungarian-born filmmaker who previously helmed VACANCY and is currently directing the latest PREDATOR movie.

"boring"? they're just saying that because they can't stand seeing a asian lead. i find myself watching more asian films, than a New Moon or any of the american crap out there. just remember that americans have different taste. Ninja Assassin didn't have enough? i believe they did what they could to keep you interested. how about van damme's films? ever enough for you? haha.

some of you pick it apart way too much, if you know so much about film making, go make your own ninja movie, and make sure it pwns NA and it makes a heck of a lot of money. i think i could haha.. anyway, i liked NA, and there was just little minor problems here and there, but overall the film pretty much rocked. they could of went for a more realistic approach, like most of sho kosugi's ninja films, but no, the movie went more like a comic book type of thing. still, even with those crafted maded up weapons and stars etc., the film did manage to put me on edge. i liked that it was very dark, very negative, the ninjas dominated the night, seeing sho was a plus, and rain did a good job. i actually thought we would see da man sho kosugi, back in black! u know, back in his full ninja gear, but seeing how his character was, i'm glad he didn't. it would of been cool though, just to see him in a ninja uniform again, to drive us fans crazy haha. its as big as seeing stallone playing rambo.

i don't know if any of you seen japanese martial art action films, but their style is completely different from the HK style. Sonny Chiba anyone? Hiroyuki Sanada? as i was watching Ninja Assassin, i already knew that they weren't going for a Yuen Woo Ping choreagraphy. COME ON! its freakin japanese, with ninjas! i know Rain isn't japanese, but that's not the point. Ninjas don't need fancy fight scenes, so quit complaining. you want them to break it down wong fei hung, jet chan style? overuse of CGI? well i say they're just trying to get their point across, and the blood needs to come out perfectly hehe. i don't see anything wrong with the editing, its probably what the director or the Wachowski brothers wanted. you people want the editing to be like what anyway? and the lighting, whats wrong with the lighting? we're dealing with Ninjas here, the darker the better. go watch American Ninja then, if you want good lighting haha, because none of the ninjas come out at night.

some scenes in Ninja Assassin, i saw the director's vision, and i think it came out really good. in some movies, they have that 1 million dollar shot, NA had a few of those. like the wide shot of when we see all the ninjas appear from darkness, i mean, that made my skin crawl.

the fight scenes were fine, i kinda like all the gore and slaughtering. i'm glad they didn't break it down with a HK style of action.

Estimates I've seen are that its second-week take will be about $5 million - about a 61% drop from week one. It'll no doubt end up making money, but I don't think there'll be a rush to book a sequel or to make a lot more ninja movies.

"unfavorable mainstream reviews." ? Hate to burst a bubble but a lot of the specialist and genre press had little good to say about it either. CG overloaded pap.

"some unimpressed critics were actually calling the film “boring" A closed mind kills the future of good moives. :(

It didn't "just" lose to New Moon. It was behind three or four other movies too.

Every one keeps overlooking the fact that Ninja Assassin was up against a garanteed box office smash in New Moon.Emo teenaged girls outnumber martial arts movie fans by a huge margin.

Anybody who says Ninja Assassin is boring should go watch American Ninja 1,2,3,4 and 5. Now THAT movie is flat-out boring and utterly ridiculous.

Rain did a stellar job in playing a role he never practiced for his entire career! I'd like to see Justin Timberlake try to do what Rain did in the U.S. over in Korea. Just because Rain's Asian doesn't mean he's genetically predisposed and has an aptitude for martial arts. That takes incredibly hard work, training and dedication.

Shame on the critics who downplay this movie!

Although I was not completely in love with this movie, I did enjoy myself. I would suggest this film to other action film fans despite my issues with the editing and lighting, not only due to the fact that I didn't think the movie was bad, but also because if we want to see more true balls to the wall martial arts action movies in theaters with more than C-movie budgets, we're going to have to support them.

I'll be sad if this movie doesn't warrant a sequel or two. There are still 8 more clans to take down, right?

Local newspaper review headline: " 'Ninja Assassin' will have audiences begging for mercy." Takes a ton of good word-of-mouth to overcome reviews like that, and this movie doesn't have enough. Clearly not a breakthrough film for the genre.
  • Don't really care about the Twilight thing, but I'm ok with the sequel being #1, 'cus I sort of understand what it's like to finally have something you can call your own, given that I grew up with the boy-oriented equivalent of this young adult stuff, such as the good Transformers movie from '86, the LA TMNT movies, and most of late Tim Burton's late 80s, early 90s output. Ninja Assassin was never going to take its crown, because it didn't have any of the names or broad-appeal of other recent action movies. [Read: PG-13 content, and/or over-use of bullet-time gunplay. Oh, and a hot female co-star.] As it is, it did pretty well for itself, considering its alleged $40 mil budget cited at Box Office Mojo. I personally couldn't stand the Wachowskis' hackery on V for Vendetta, so I'm hoping the surprisingly positive audience WOM on NA isn't just bs
  • Dude, if you don't think Naomie Harris is HAWT, then My Friend, u need to get ur Brain Re-Examined, Good Friend

There's more strawmen being flung around here in inexplicable defense of this film than the finale of HEROES OF THE EAST*. Nobody (worth listening to) is complaining about the gore (other than it mostly being digital gore instead of practical F/X make-up) or the R rating. They're mostly complaining about the horrendous, destructive editing style of the film, the overuse of CGI and the poorly-filmed action scenes. WOLVERINE, though - that's an apt point of comparison. It's that bad.

*Exhibit A in how to make a movie involving ninjas that doesn't suck.
  • I agree, to a degree, but a Ninja film this is, and though the "Editing" Sux @SS, who cares?

If you want some Old SkooL action, Like u Said, Re-Rent Some Old SkooL action to sate your appetites, but I myself, LIKE the Prospect of a Modern Day Scenario of Ninjas, FTW Editing be DAMND...

Whatever, Ya"LL be "BitchinG" too Much, anyhow...

If it don't Measure up to YOUR Standards, haha...

Then you Bemoan the days when Old SchOOL, action Cinema had Longer takes...Whatever, Diff'rent Strokes, ya know...

Anyhow, no hate, just Love here, I appreciate ur Opinion, though I disagree, it doesn't matter, if it's Damp, Dark & Skittish aka Creeperly~LooKin' I stiLL Want 2 See this, and you can feeL however u'd like to, but I'mma Show these Fine Folks some love, cuz u know what, at the END of the day, these individuals bore their bodies, sweat & blood and Tears for this movie, and No Hack Job, Cinematic Stylistic Editing can do ANYTHING to STOP Moi From Appreciating this FINE FLICK, with Its FINE Cast & Crew...

I LOVE Naomie Harris & Rain is da SHIT, I hope he gets to make "Awaken the Dragon" and I don't GIVE a shit that I'm NO "FINE" Connousier of Flix or Action//Kung Fu Cinema as yourself, but u know what?

AS I am a Layman, I STILL LOVE THIS MOVIE, no matter what no one says, cuz at the end of the day, tis a matter for Individual Discerning Tastes, capische?

    Laterz..

NINJA ASSASSIN lives up to it's title. people complaining about blood and gore, give me a headache. what do u expect from the weapons used in this film?? common sense tell u ninja's make their moves at night. people are so use to graceful moves and motion of past martial art films, they don't see the growth of this genrue. ACTION, ACTION and ACTION that's what the film gave me, Just what i expected. btw 21mil. is not a bad call for a film that was in the least amount of theartres and only for 18+. plus, the other big hitters were generating income a whole week before and almost twice the amount of theatres.
  • slashem
Ninja Assassin is a solid action film it's not Boring. If your talking about Ninjas expect a lot of blood. I actually liked the R rating. If you prefer less blood maybe you should watch X-men: Origins Wolverine.
